We find four items of interest in the northern Utah news media this morning, so we'll reel them off from the top of the stack. The first two are articles from the Standard-Examiner, each of which involves court proceedings for the accused perpetrators of recent shooting incidents in Ogden, as these individuals are brought before the bar of justice.
The first story reports on Wednesday's preliminary hearing for 15-year old Diego Mora, who appears to be on track for prosecution as an adult offender. Testimony offered in court, it would appear, eliminates any doubt about whether the crimes with which Mora has been charged were "gang related":
"OGDEN — Diego Mora told police that, on a scale of one to 10, he was a three when it came to his standing in an Ogden street gang. The second article reports on the Wednesday preliminary hearing for Jeremy Isaac Gallegos, the accused shooter in a July 11 shooting Ogden police call "gang-related." At this point in the proceedings the court has denied the defendant bail, and has issued an additional order prohibiting contact between the accused and the state's three eye-witnesses. Although the story doesn't report the court's reasoning for this, we're going to speculate that these measures are intended by the court to prevent any retributive acts by the defendant, which might be directed toward the prosecution's key witnesses. This, gentle readers, is what courts have to do in cities which are plagued with violent gang activity.
The 15-year-old accused of killing 22-year-old Jesus Aparicio Sept. 21 at the Phillips Kicks 66 convenience store was in court Wednesday afternoon for a preliminary hearing before Judge J. Mark Andrus in 2nd District Juvenile Court.
Detective Tim Scott testified that he took several signed statements from Mora in the hours and days after the shooting, in which Mora stated he shot Aparicio and committed a separate robbery because he was tired of being teased and of being seen as weak among his gang associates. ...
Scott testified that Mora told him he did not want to kill Aparicio, but his friends egged him on after Aparicio insulted Mora’s gang, telling him to “just blast that fool.” ...
"I didn’t really care,” Scott read from Mora’s statement. “It was (my friend) that was tripping.”
Emerald City citizens need to face the obvious reality of this situation. Gang culture is thriving in Ogden, and is quite well entrenched, in which connection we again wonder whether it might have been more prudent, over the past 7-1/2 years, for our "can do" mayor to have invested more police resources into anti-gang law enforcement and pre-emption, and less police manpower into writing traffic tickets.
The next item, a very good Standard-Examiner editorial, comments favorably about the current state of Governor Huntsman's Geologic Hazards Working Group project:
It's a good editorial, as we said; and the accompanying Grondahl cartoon ain't half bad either.People have complained for the past decade about residential developments on hillsides that give way — slide, sink, etc. — after the homes are built but there hasn’t been much of an organized effort to find a solution. Most cities and counties have simply proceeded to do things pretty much as they have always done them, using methods that have proven inadequate.
Finally, and thankfully, that’s changing. Gov. bled the Geologic Hazards Working Group to study the issue and make recommendations to help local plan ning commissions judge whether or not a given piece of sloping real estate was suitable for building. The group — so far made up of representatives from various state, county and local governments, but set to include developers as its work goes forward — has just issued a list of recommendations that Huntsman has accepted. As noted recently by Standard-Examiner reporter Bryon Saxton, the group says local governments need more education on liability, updated maps and expertise regarding potential geological hazards. They also need to strictly enforce codes pertaining to land grades. This is just a start, though. Huntsman has decided to keep the Geologic Hazards Working Group together to discuss further reform concerning issues like disclosure. To wit: When a property owner sells a parcel of land that has been judged to be at-risk, what’s the responsibility to inform the buyer? Currently, it’s a buyer-beware world out there. That’s even true when it comes to selling a house on land that may be at-risk.
Finally, we'll highlight this morning's Salt Lake Tribune story, just the kind of thing that Salt Lake City readers love to read, concerning their "odd-ball" neighbors up north in Emerald City. Many Salt Lakers believe we're a mite "peculiar." And with stories like the one linked above -- who can blame them?
Take it away, gentle readers.
The floor is all yours this morning.

I picked up a small tidbit that may be of interest to some of you regarding lying little matty's plans for the front runner.
If true,(he told a luncheon of business folks's) I doubt very seriously people will be piling off the train to shop in Ogden.
What folks will be greeted by as they get off the train will be a Walmart, yes, eminant domain and gadi.
This would be the most short sighted blunder yet. All that potential paved under to provide parking for the sale of Chinese goods, and their American profiteers.
How many Walmarts are in the area all ready?
What could be the doorway to all downtown, unique shops and restaurants, no, a parking lot and a big ugly building.
"What could be the doorway to all downtown, unique shops and restaurants, no, a parking lot and a big ugly building."
AND... a gondola station.
Althepal, you imply to ," wisk them futher away."
Yesiree, Bill.
Like this: Wheeeeeeeeeee!
Walmart. Hah. I guarantee that I do not go to Park City to the Outlet Mall to go to Walmart. I don't go to the Gateway in SLC to go to Walmart.
Should a walmart be built in Ogden, this is what will happen.
The smiths on 12 and Harrison will close and albertson will close, the harmons on 5 points is close to closing now and you'll see stop and shop close. form there you'll see the shopco close and then you'll see all the little strip malls then close.
This is what happens to all the old time business that have supported this community for a long time and that is how the mayor will reward them. Good luck to them all!
What Rudi, you didn't find a basket of dead flowers on your doorstep this morning?
As to the Moulton article in this morning's Trib about Littrell's law suit. I might be a little confused here so help me out. In the article, and others I've read on the subject, it indicates that all the candidates would have to be disqualified under the law suit. It seems to me that in reading the lawsuit, the provisions in the law require a candidate to be taken off the ballot if they fail to remedy the initial problem after a complaint has been filed. The initial problem is not the de-listing offense. The penalties don't seem to come into play if no body complains to begin with. In other words, the problem Godfrey has is different than the other candidates because nobody complained about them and thus their transgressions have not risen to the level of removal from the ballot. Littrell did go through all the processes required by the law, Godfrey and his stooges Williams and Mansel stone walled her, did not remedy the problem, and thus elevated the problem to where it is now.
In any event, it seems to me that the real underlying problem highlighted here is Godfrey and his stooge's arrogance and actions that indicate they all feel they are above the law.
Incidentally, I would like to see the "Godfrey problem" settled at the ballot box and not by the courts, so I am not happy about this suit either. I do very much respect Littrell though. She is a true patriot and fighter for the rights of man and the equal and just application of the laws of the land. She ainta fraid to take on the little tyrant any time any place. I think Ogden ought to have a Dorothy Littrell day set aside to honor her, complete with a full on parade with floats, old cars, marching bands, politicians, horses, and a hoosegow jail float for the horse's asses like Godfrey and his sycophants.
HeeHaw:
Lying Little Matty Gondola Godfrey's umbrageous arguments in re: the nature of the Littrell complaint against him -- and basically any accusation directed his way -- is typical of his raison d'etre and that of the entire covert OTown squadron of Wayne Peterson's famed Squirrel Patrol: deny, redirect, attack motive, attach blame, self-victimize, cry and then dream of the glorious day when THE GONDOLA will be erected from our cursed land and glide with glee, filled to the rim with gold-gilded geeks from "ski companies," Wolfgang Puck, Prada reps, David Hasslehoff, and Terrance Trent D-Arby, to exactly nowhere ... above the impoverished and unwashed backs of the slaves who build monuments to God-complexed teeny-weeny men, ala the Egyptions to King Tut or maybe OTown's residents to a short dork from Harrisville and his Geigerian cohorts. Read Addled Ed's letter to the Godfrey-reeking Stand-Ex regarding the Lying Little Gondola Freak, prepare to retch, and you'll see the most base evidence of this widespread sociopathic phenomenon. The asinine perspective of Lying Little Matty Gondola Godfrey's father-in-law is all too telling, and it neatly summarizes the delusion of the entire Squirrel Patrol. Speaking of which, THE SKI IS BEAUTIFUL BLUE is apparently ensconsed in an onion-filled cubicle at Convergys, has donned a Burger King headset, and is making harried and hurried personal phone calls to seek support for his pal Lying Little Matty. Be prepared, OTown, for a proper response: Shove it, THE SKI IS BEAUTIFUL BLUE! Lying Little Matty's got to go!
THE SKI IS BEAUTIFUL BLUE
To revisit the FrontRunner speculations from the previous thread:
I'm not bothered if the Ogden station is used primarily to convey Ogdenites to high-paying jobs in SLC. Much of their paychecks will be spent in Ogden.
Development around a commuter station rarely materializes immediately; it could be a few years before we see what will grace the skyline. Let's hope entrepreneurs will envision business opportunities near the station and that Salt Lakers looking for better housing bargains will find real estate nearby.
I agree that a Wal-Mart would irreparably harm many local businesses, if Ogdenites actually started shopping at it. I for one would never set foot in it. It would be an insufferably tacky face to put on the Junction City for disembarking tourists.
The FrontRunner should cause a merciful diminution of traffic on I-15. The sooner the better.
Jason: Is it possible the sub rosa Squirrel Patrol is the Danites, reincarnated?
Moroni, Bill Hickman, Porter Rockwell and John D. Lee would probably come looking for you, if they were privy to your insinuating such a comparison.
Unfortunately for Boss Godfrey, the modern day Mormon Enforcers don't measure up to the sturdy likes of Hickman, Rockwell and Lee.
What we have now are the Geigers -- And Boss Godfrey himself -- as the clumsy modern-day "enforcers.
And then we also have that poor old sack O'shit Tom Moore, aka Jay Asquith Cavendish, who unsuccessfully tried to blackmail your blogmeister a couple of weeks ago.
Let's just say the Dreaded Danites have seen better times.
They definitely ain't what they used to be in "frontier times".
Rudi
How could any one be so stupid as to think they could blackmail such a well known and public reprobate as you?
Is this Moore guy really so clueless that he doesn't know that every one knows that you are a very baaaaaaad boy?
"Is this Moore guy really so clueless that he doesn't know that every one knows that you are a very baaaaaaad boy?"
Beats me!
Your blogmeister never said he was an angel, BTW.
Moroni:
Curious that the Avenging Geigers continue to prop up their Brigham Young -- Lying Little Matty Gondola Godfrey -- when he has seemingly pulled a Thomas B. Marsh and dismissed THE GONDOLA, aka Gallatin settlements. Although, judging from their current behavior, we can conclude that Sampson Avard, aka Addled Ed, made his son, the onion-reeking Geigers, GTrain Wilkerson, the Ballantynes and Blodgetss, the Storeys and a few others, swear Danite oaths "to support [Lying Lying Matty Gondola Godfrey and Wayne Peterson's famed Squirrel Patrol] in all things that they say or do, whether right or wrong." Then, of course, there is Captain Short-Deck Geiger, the reincarnation of Sidney Rigdon, who offered his Salt Sermon unto God, a rant in which he likened gondola dissenters to "salt that had lost its savor," who will be "trodden under the foot of men" and under the path of THE GOLDEN GONDOLA. Add "dissenter" to the obstructionist, naysayer, and hate-filled labels I now carry, there, Porter.
Short deck was seen praticing his throat slashing knife work on his egg stained, east west aligned tennis court just the other day. Oh wait, its October, might have been carving a pumkin, who knows?
Speaking of something scary on your porch, how about having to pass by a jackolantern carved in the image of Jay Cavandish every evening. Yikes.
Curt Geiger is working full time calling every number in the Ogden phone book to ask for a vote for Godfrey.
It is obvious that he wasn't looking at names - just calling numbers - or he should have known better than to call my house.
I'm glad I wasn't home. All I got was a recording. You know what I did with that.
When you are talking about the funeral plants left on Littrell's front steps please don't overlook a very important aspect -
the fact that a map showing the route to the Littrell property was stuck prominently in the top of the plants on the back side of the handwritten note from Jason Godfrey on behalf of Jeanne Godfrey and family.
And the Mayor says this was supposed to make Littrell "a happier person".
If I had just buried my father and husband a few hours earlier I wouldn't have been interested in making anybody "happy".
I would have been trying to console my grief.
My thoughts would have been with my departed loved one.
I have no problem at all in believing the flowers from the Godfrey's to Mz Lattrell were no more or less than what the Godfreys represented them to be.
I'm sure that they see Lattrell as an unhappy and angry woman who might be consoled by a basket of flowers. It doesn't seem logical that if the flowers were meant as some sort of threat that they would put the note in with them.
I also doubt that a religious woman like Mrs. Godfrey would be thinking of revenge and silly game playing on the day of her life time partner's funeral!
Now if it were just Mayor Godfrey in question, then maybe there could be a sinister angle attached.
I don't think it fair to condemn the whole Godfrey family for the actions of their bad seed son.
To ozboy,
Say what you want but the whole plant thing is weird, really weird.
Yes, HeeHaw, the plant thing is plain f"""ed up; who the hell does that kind of horseshit the day of a parent's viewing? I can tell you my state of mind, and it wasn't anywhere near delivering plants and a gondola axle wrapped in a shitball, Godfrey-reeking, editorially weak, Squirrel-Patroller-Lee-Carter-led, gondola-loving Stand-Ex to THE SKI IS BEAUTIFUL BLUE's doorstep. "Out of Christian fellowhsip and love," says Lying Little Matty Gondola Godfrey -- this short, teeny, criminal, gondola-loving geek is patently pathological! He doesn't even recognize when he lies anymore! Gawdalmighty!
THE SKI IS BEAUTIFUL BLUE
How could the Godfreys see Littrel as angry and unhappy when they don't even know her?
And why would they be even thinking of her on a day of the father's funeral?
The obvious question remains -
why doesn't Godfrey just turn over his financial records to the City Recorder to audit as the Ogden Municipal Code provides for and settle the whole lawsuit thing immediately?
The obvious answer remains that he can't afford to let the sun shine on his bank statements.
Real bad rumors I've been hearing about godfrey's threats to use eminent domain to seize River property and also the land godfrey wanted to give to Wal-mart before the first littrell nose-to-nose.
Sounds like he has made sure his old buddies, peterson and lesham, have bought up 85% of the properties so that under Bramble's version of eminent domain the city can steal the rest of the property to give to one of them.
Godfrey is making sure that just in case he doesn't get back in for four more years that he will have a buddy to hang on to for a job.
Any odds on that idea?
Our form of government is touted as being the best system in the world.
I am beginning to have my doubts, big time.
We can't get the County Attorney deCaria to do anything about a problem. He wants only a felony such as a murder.
We can't get the Utah Attorney General to do anything a bout a problem.
We are told by everyone in office that they won't help. Everything we tell them about a problem is considered hearsay and we are told to settle it in court.
A regular citizen can't shell out thousands of dollars to fight the system in court.
We are also told by some of you on this blog to settle it at the ballot box. That is the biggest joke of all.
The people we elect don't see the real, every day problems that need solving and the ones who get elected certainly do not have a solution for solving a problem.
They have their own agenda.
Nero:
You are right. With the indicted Lesham and Peterson having caarte blanche to so much property, they will be ina position to set their sights on anyone else's property they want.
Godfrey has already terrorized one LONG time business couple with seizing their historic property if they don't play ball with him.
They used to be activists, but now acquiesce.
This man (?) is a bully. He's vengeful, corrupt and mean as a junkyard dog.
I wonder if the Iranians, Venezuelans, and No Koreans would empathize and sympathize with us for living under such a tyrant too?
Hey! Al Capone led and ran his "business interests" from Alcatraz. John Gotti did the same from his prison cell.
There's no reason at all that Gadi's "little lieutenant" couldn't work for Gadi, and represent his interests, while Gadi is cooling his heels in the California slam for five to ten, assuming Godfrey becomes un-elected.
Just a quiet reminder that Mr. Gaddi has not been convicted of anything at this point. He is under indictment, but has not pled out, nor has a jury or judge found him guilty. And so he is entitled to the presumption of innocence. There are rumors afoot, un-corroborated at this point, the the City is transferring [by sale I presume] options it holds on some River Project properties to Mr. Gaddi. If that is happening [unconfirmed at this point], I'd have some doubts about the wisdom of transferring options on such key properties to a developer under indictment; I'd want the legal question resolved first, I think.
But as yet, Mr. Gaddi has not been convicted of anything. We need I think in fairness to him to keep that in mind.
"But as yet, Mr. Gaddi has not been convicted of anything."
That's exactly what Capone's and Gotti's lawyers said!
Get real:
That is also what people who are innocent and who are found so by juries have said. The principle... the presumption of innocence... is important. Very important. And not to be thrown aside, even for momentary political advantage. It protects us all.
A recent example: Sen. Craig has a long record of supporting laws limiting the rights of the accused and strengthening powers of prosecutors and the police. But now, he's been accused of a crime by a prosecutor, he got caught up in the system, and all of a sudden he's become an advocate of civil liberties and the rights of the accused.
Fundamental principles like the presumption of innocence matter. And if they aren't there to benefit Mr. Gaddi, I can't be sure they'll be there to benefit anyone else, including me, should I ever be accused unjustly of a crime. It really is that simple. I want Mr. Gaddi to get the presumption of innocence because I want it to be there, if necessary, someday for me, and my family, and my friends. And everyone else, for that matter.
So damn it man I think we ought to just give this feller Gadi a fair trial and then hang him.
Git a rope!
Victor:
Want an idea where that kind of thinking leads, go rent "The Oxbow Incident."
About the funeral flowers:
Beware geeks bearing gifts.
News wire
Local Ogden activist Dorothy Littrell woke up this morning with a horses head lying next to her in the bed.
She immediately suspected Ogden's mayor Mathew Godfrey of the deed. She said she believed it was his way of trying to intimidate her and force her to drop her legal action against him.
The Mayor responded by saying: "My Godfreyite movement cannot spare any horse heads. Every one knows that horses heads and horses asses go together. You can't have one with out the other. As we are all horses asses in the movement it is obvious we do not have any extra horses heads to spare thus the one found in Mz. Littrell's bed did not come from us.
The Standard-Examiner likes to sit on the fence, according to Andy Howell.
Well Andy, we have a little bit of folk advice for you:
People who sit on the fence get splinters.
Poor Andy. He's being flailed from both sides, mainly because he's sitting on a "thorn-laden" fence. It's a cowardly stance that The Standard has adopted.
Just go ahead and follow Lee Carter's orders, Andy. Endorse Mayor Godfrey. That's what we know your newspaper is going to do anyway, right? Go ahead and continue to be the "Godfrey House Propaganda Organ."
This dillemma of course could have been prevented, if you'd devoted some of your resources to investigating the truth, rather than staying on the sidelines of the ongoing community debate during the past two years.
Fat chance the Suits from Sanduskey will allow you endorse anyone but Blessed Boss Godfrey though.
How does it feel, Andy, to be identified with human civilization's oldest profession?
Excuse me now. I now need to go puke while I consider the sorry state of journalism, especially in Ogden City.
You should be ashamed of yourself, Andy.
