Dirty Tricks in Ogden Politics

You can possibly file this story in your "truth is stranger than fiction" file, gentle readers. Judging from a shocking comedic email string that's been sent to us by several gentle readers (and which seems to be circulating widely by email within the Ogden community,) it appears that our loveable old friend, "Socrates" (aka Steve Larsen) may now be working in some capacity for Ron Atencio, a declared Democrat candidate/challenger for Neil Hansen's District 9 Utah House of Representatives seat.

If these email missives are genuine, it could constitute evidence to support the deduction that Mr. Larson, one of the several "Gang of Six" losers in our recent municipal city council election campaign, may be working full-steam to beat Rep. Hansen at convention, in order to face a very fine (but purportedly politically-doomed) Republican Candidate, Ogden city firefighter Robert Miles.

Whether Mr. Larsen is acting as Mr. Atencio's official campaign manager, or in any capacity at all, we do not know. Our investigation is continuing. Whatever his capacity though, if any, it's apparent that Mr. Larsen (or perhaps an imposter) has "pulled out all the stops," and launched a campaign on a foundation of political "dirty tricks" worthy of Donald Segretti.

Rather than keep our readers in further suspense, we are linking a copy of the full email string here. We are inclined to believe, based on interviews we have completed to date, that it is authentic. We have also compared the email address of the original sender with Steve Larsen's address as it appears in our own email address book. They are identical. Still, the possibility of forgery cannot be ruled out. The original email could be entirely bogus.

We are awaiting information from the Weber County Clerk's office, to determine whether any of the named recipients actually followed through with the original sender's solicitation.

In the meantime, we've decided to start a new thread on this topic, and throw the raw data out for public discussion, without further editorial comment.

So what do our gentle readers say about this?

And what say you, Steve Larsen?

The topic is wide open.

Comments, anyone?

hello one and all,
It seems to me that because Rep. Neil Hansen has lived up to his campaign slogan of your best choice for your voice, some of the People in Ogden would like to silence that voice. I for one Am sooooo, glad that he is a representative of all the people that live in his district and not just those that have voted for him. I have found that he is open and forthright, he gathers as much information as he can before he makes the decisions on our behalf. For the last 8 years that he has represeted us, I could not ask anyone else to do a better job. It would be a shame to have that voice silenced.
What a true statesman. thank you Repesentative Hansen for all the hard work that you do for us.
keep up the good work.

Well, I am not represented by Neil Hansen, but I think he is a fine gentleman. He worked hard for the firefighters in attempting to kill SB229...Godfrey and Johnson's revenge bill against our brave firefighters and police officers.

That email 'string' with the exception of SOME on the city council, who most likely didn't know they were part of Atencio's team...are a sorry lot. Can you top the gall of Larsen to do such a thing? Did Atencio okay that email and ALL it's recipients???
Shame on him if he did, and shame on him if he didn't, for having such a poophead as Larsen doing ANYthing for him!

Maybe this was just some majic mystery tour that the Peyote Princess dreamed up in flashback! Or maybe it wasn't a flashback, but a current hallucination.

As for Larsen, well it could have been a reaction to a couple of Big Mac's and a big ol pile of fries.

Can you imagine if either one of these screw balls had actually got elected to the council?

I cannot understand why people are saying that Ron Atencio may not have known about this e-mail, given the fact that his name is on the list of recipients. Also, the closing line: "I thank you, and Ron thanks you for whatever you can do," tends to point to some conferring on this matter beforehand.

It would be interesting to see, as Rudi says, how many actually did change their affiliation, and then also, how many change back.

I did indeed change my affiliation from unaffiliated to the Democratic Party. In years past I have been unaffiliated, as I prefer to vote for the best candidate and not straight party ticket. My personal choices have always leaned toward the Democratic Party and after meeting many members from the Democratic Party during my wife's campaign I felt this was a good opportunity to become more involved.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Larsen chose to put the process of delegate voting in such an odd light as it only fueled the conspiracy-themed conclusions drawn by some.

My respect and support for Ron Atencio are drawn from the work I have seen him do with his business downtown - especially with the youth in giving them a place to demonstrate their talents. I believe a rapport with youth is crucial not only to future of political parties but to the future of our city. A recent post regarding the Marshall White Center said “Speaking as a senior citizen it is my opinion that mixing seniors with teenagers is not going to work. The two groups have no focus on common interests.” This was disturbing to me but very reflective of the feelings of many senior citizens I met while campaigning with my wife. In past cultures the elders would pass on the traditions to the youth and while the two groups would not always be in harmony there is a hope that there could be some common ground and teaching on both sides that could take place.

Mr. Atencio is also an active member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce another huge component of Ogden currently and its future. A strong understanding of the Hispanic community and its inherent diversity and its challenges is going to be necessary to bring together all of Ogden’s resources.

Mr. Atencio also has a thorough knowledge of the businesses downtown and is a member of the Planning Commission. His recent voting demonstrated clear thinking and an ability to not go along with the crowd.

While my support for Mr. Atencio was one of the motivating factors for changing my affiliation to the Democratic Party, it was not the sole one.

I, myself claim no experience in the political arena and am new to the nuances involved but am definitely learning quickly. I appreciate the candor of this blog and appreciate its role in my political education.

PS. Voices was outstanding – great writing, great acting

well chad I guess that you are learning quickly, but the lesson that I hope that your wife as learned from all of this is, that in politics the whole reason that we elect people to offices of trust is for just that trust. with the letter that she sent around to verious people shows that she does not have the trust it takes to be in poitics and I think that your whole organization has lost the trust of the community. the only way that she and the rest of you will get that back and may I say that it will not happen over night is that you have to now do some very trustworthy thing in the community, do you not agree with me.

If the Peyote Princess is involved, along with Steve Larcenous and the rest of that bunch, then Atencio won't make it out of the Primary. This very idiotic act, with "Mr. Atencio" (doesn't the "Mr. Atencio," like chadmosher writes to make Atencio sound more politically viable, sound official) dodging and running for cover, shows us that he ain't politically savy and has no chance of unseating Neil Hansen. But it does make for good theater. Keep it up, won't you. With all the secrecy and chaos in Ogden's current Government, we need something to giggle about.

Mr. Atencio has as much right to stand for state legislative office as does his incumbent opponent. And Democrats from his district are free to support him or to oppose him as they think best. My only concern is that when the candidates for nomination duke it out at the convention, the decision will be made by Democratic delegates, not Republicans in disguise. As I noted before, sailing under false colors is not an honorable thing to do. Those who do it, in my view, forfeit any claim to the public's trust.

Oh my heck!! Are the faded redhead, Larsen, Geiger)s, and all those email recipients really REPUBLICANS?????? So, now they are Democrats? (I'm sooo relieved they're gone).
The Republican Party doesn't need turncoats. Demo's will welcome them with open arms...or arm, as a knife for stabbing in the back will be held in the other.
I'm thinking that since we haven't heard from MR Atencio about THE email, nor any denial and distancing from the neigborhood stroller, Larsen, he just may have written the epistle for Larsen to send.
Neil Hansen: just keep on keepin' on! Try not to be too embarrassed by the these born again democrats. The conversion is only as deep as the 'baptismal font'.
