Breaking: Crackpot Republicans Just Banned The 1st Amendment On The Floor Of Congress

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard -- H. L. Mencken

Bad news for democracy, via the Occupy Democrats website:

Here's the disturbing lede:
As if the American people needed any more warning that House Republicans were set to commit even more heinous acts of legislative terrorism once Donald Trump is sworn in, they just passed a bill to ban Democrats from filming or photographing the debates in the House Chamber. The proposed legislation would refer members of the House to the Ethics Committee and would levy [huge] fines against those who would record Congressional business.
And here's the gist:
It’s a clearly undemocratic move to shield the Republican-strangled House from the things they are already salivating at the thought of doing – like gutting Social Security and Medicare, and replacing them with a for-profit voucher system, repealing Obamacare, privatizing veteran’s healthcare, opening up our national parks for fossil fuel developers, cutting off funding for Planned Parenthood, passing abortion bans, deregulating Wall Street, slashing taxes for the rich and the wealthy…the list goes on and on. So much is at stake here, and the public MUST be aware of just exactly what these spineless, honorless cowards are planning to do to the working people of this country.
Read up, people:
As one of our Weber County Forum friends wisely opined this afternoon, "You know, I think a good rule of thumb is this: if you're a Congressperson or Senator doing something on the job you would be ashamed/embarrassed/damaged by if your constituents saw you doing it, maybe you shouldn't be doing it."

Prepare for an unprecedented onslaught on American civil liberties, people, as cretins like Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell prepare to serve their corporate masters, and do their dirty deeds entirely behind closed doors.

Here's our sodden closing quote, as we contemplate all this:

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard -- H. L. Mencken

Happy 2017, people.

Breaking: Rob Bishop’s Utah Public Lands Initiative Defeated

The only pending question: How can can conscientious Utahns drive this fatass corporate-funded slut Rob Bishop outta the US congress?

Great news peeps

Here's the lede:
The 114th House of Representatives is history, taking its last votes of the year on December 8th. Unsurprisingly, Utah Republican Representative Rob Bishop’s Public Lands Initiative (PLI) did not come up for a vote. With only a single House co-sponsor (Jackass Utah Republican Representative Jason Chaffetz), and without a Senate sponsor, the bill failed to gain much-needed support, even among anti-public lands loyalists.

Thanks to solid and wide-ranging opposition from Native American tribes, the conservation and recreation communities, and two of the Utah counties the bill purported to represent, the PLI’s threat to Native American sovereignty and Utah’s wild public lands is, for now, put to rest.

Just do it, Obama: Come January, you will be consigned to the sidelines as Trump occupies the Oval Office and begins the work of dismantling your legacy. But there is one action that you could take on January 3, 2017 that could hold off some of the worst potential abuses of a Trump administration for a year or more, or perhaps indefinitely. Weber State Football Gameday Playoff Thread: WSU v. Chattanooga

FCS Playoffs: Weber State wants to pitch perfect game against Chattanooga

The Weber State football team will take on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the first round of the 2016 NCAA FCS Playoffs Saturday in Chattanooga. Here's the lede from this morning's Standard-Examiner story Wildcats Fans:
OGDEN — The Weber State football team accomplished its goal of making the FCS Playoffs. Now, the Wildcats face the daunting task of traveling to take on the Chattanooga Mocs of the Southern Conference.
Chattanooga was ranked in the STATS Top 25 FCS poll every week this season, sometimes as high as No. 5. At 8-3, the Mocs now sit at No. 11, while Weber State has cracked the rankings for the first time all season at No. 25.
“When you get to this stage, everyone’s really good,” WSU head coach Jay Hill said. “They’re exactly what you would expect a playoff team to look like. This is a team that hung with Alabama last week for three quarters. They’re exactly what a Top 25 FCS team should look like.”
Read Brandon Garside's full writeup here:
Saturday’s game will kickoff at 12 p.m. MST from Finley Stadium in Chattanooga. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Jim Barbar and Watson Brown on the call. ESPN3 is available online as well as on the Watch ESPN Apps. It will also be broadcast on  1430 KLO radio with Tony Parks and former WSU head coach and Athletic Director Jerry Graybeal on the call.

Update 11/26/16 5:31 p.m.: What a bummer, dang!

WSU Game Day Thread: WSU v. Cal Poly

WSU Wildcats snap two-game losing streak, beat Cal Poly 22-15

Here's the lede from yesterday's pre-game Standard-Examiner story:
OGDEN — Weber State head coach Jay Hill said the Wildcats’ loss to Northern Arizona was painful, but his team still has a lot at stake with No. 16 Cal Poly making the trip to Stewart Stadium on Saturday.
“Not all’s lost. We’ve got an opportunity to beat a really good team in Cal Poly,” Hill said after practice Thursday. “That in and of itself is a big enough challenge. We’ve got another opportunity to have a winning record with this game, we’ve got another opportunity to reach a bunch of goals that are still out there for us.
“If they think all’s lost because we lost two in the row, they’re crazy. There’s a lot to play for right now.”
Hill believes seven wins and finishing fourth in the Big Sky should be enough to be selected for the FCS Playoffs.
Check out Brandon Garside's full writeup here:
Coach Hill makes it clear what needs to happen to win for  the Wildcats squad today, and for their ultimate FCS Playoffs qualification:
We’ve got to have toughness. We’ve got to swarm tackle, we’ve got to get all of our guys to the ball,” Hill said. “The offense has got to be productive We’ve got to put points on the board when the offense is out there, and the defense has got to find ways out of drives.”
The game kicks off at noon today inside Stewart Stadium and will be broadcast on KJZZ TV, WatchBigSky.com  as well as 1430 AM KLO.

Update 11/12/16 3:00 p.m.:

Too cool. Wildcats fans, no?
We'll sit tight with this encouraging SL-Trib  story, unless and until our home-town newspaper (the Standard-Examiner)  gets off its ass, and manages to get its own WSU football story up.

Update 11/12/16 10:00 p.m.:

The Standard's Brandon Garside has his own story on tonight's big WSU win:
Needless to say, the surfer dude/journalists around San Luis Obispo ain't so happy with tonight's game outcome:

Weber State University Game Day Thread: WSU v. Northern Arizona U.

When our Wildcats suck, they always Suck Big-time, No?

Our Weber State Wildcats are back home at Stewart Stadium this afternoon. Here's the lede from yestrerday's Standard-Examiner Story:
OGDEN — The Weber State Wildcats’ loss to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks marked the end of the program’s longest winning streak since 2008, but with three games left on the schedule — two of which are at home — the Wildcats still have an FCS playoff appearance to fight for.
Weber State’s quest for the playoffs continues this weekend as the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (4-4, 3-2 BSC) make the trip to Ogden as head coach Jay Hill looks to earn his first win over NAU.
Read Brandon Garside's full Standard-Examiner pre-game writweup here:
More details from Mr. Garside:
NAU was picked in the preseason polls to win the conference, but losses to Eastern Washington and Northern Colorado out of the gate have kept the team in the middle of the Big Sky pack.
Since then, NAU is the winner of three straight, most recently an impressive 45-34 win over then-No. 10 Montana.
“They’re very talented,” WSU Coach Hill said. “Their wide receivers are outstanding, in my opinion. They do a great job getting the ball down the field. They’re very sound on defense. Bottom line, it’s another big challenge in the Big Sky this week. We’re excited. We’re excited to be back home.”
Kickoff is scheduled for noon Saturday, Nov. 5, at Stewart Stadium. The game will be broadcast on KJZZ TV and air on 1430 AM KLO, with Steve Klauke and David Hale on the radio call.

Go, Wildcats!

Update 11/5/16 8:32 pm;  Well... that certainly sucked, dinnit, eh Wildcats fans?

2016 Utah General Election Update: House District 9 Voters Have Two Distinct Options This November

Top notch advice! Don't Vote For The Peterson Wimp!

The Standard-Examiner has a very fine story in re our pending 2016 Utah General Election reporting, concerning Weber County's Legislative 9 race, via yeoman reporter Cathy McKitrick,  who writes today about House District 9,  a district which  has been so severely gerrymandered by our crackpot GOP legtislature, that it runs from middle Ogden, to Roy, and West Haven, as if to defy any attempt at common sense. He're's Ms McKitrick's most excellent story. The Wildcats (2-2) will go for their third-straight win of the season, a streak the purple and white haven’t achieved since 2010 in Ron McBride’s penultimate season.
The Vikings (2-3) are coming off a spectacular 2015 season that ended in the second round of the FCS Playoffs with a No. 6 national ranking. Now, PSU is 1-1 in conference play with a 45-20 win over Idaho State last week and a 45-31 loss to Southern Utah.
“We’ve got to be able to match their physicality. They’re tough. They’re not going to give up,” WSU head coach Jay Hill said. “They’re going to battle you to the bitter end so we’ve got to be ready to do the same things ourselves.

Read Mr. Garside's full story, Peeps:
If you can't make it to Stewart Stadium for tonight's big homecoming game, Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on KJZZ TV. It will also air on 1430 AM with Steve Klauke and former Wildcat David Hale on the call. Added bonus.  You can also catch tonight's live game video online, we're told, via Big Sky Sports, in the unlikely instances wherein you might be working late in your job cubicle (or prison cell), and/or had your Big Screen TeeVee "repoed."

Go Wildcats!

Update 10/8/16 9:00 P.M.:  The Wildcats slide by with another "thin" win, 14-10.  Bravo Wildcats!

Devastating New Ad Shows Trump Saying All the Things Dumb Mike Pence Claims He Never Said -Updated

Via political genius Rhonda Lea Nally (Certified Journalist):
Hay! You know, if you're going to say it on camera--when you know you are being recorded and people can go back and listen to it--you really ought to think about what you are saying or it can come back to haunt you.
Here's the proof, about which the lively Ms. Nally properly alludes:
Check it out, Peeps!

Wake the hell up, my Republican friends...

Update 10/8/16: The pot sickens. Trump pretty much kills off his presidential ambitions, with an ill-timed, candid video:

Conservative Pundit: Donald Trump Is ‘God’s Anointed Choice For President’

Save this one to your "humor files" folder, Peeps:

"In a column today, far-right radio host Laurie Roth writes that "several people" 'have been awakened and given visions and words from God as to who would become President' and they were (additionally told by God) that, quoting again, 'all told that Donald Trump was God’s anointed choice for President.'

Roth reportedly wonders if God is using Trump to “conquer evil” and “build back a country that God loves,” citing a chapter of the Bible that she believes points to a Trump election victory.

Here's the Laurie Roth bloglink, Peeps (wethink):

“Pray for a Donald Trump victory and expect greatness,” she writes. “Don’t do this because Trump is mouthy and imperfect but because he will honor Israel, is a sincere and new Christian who prays to the living God, has exceptional ideas for leadership and who has been prepared for this job…perhaps even by God. I believe God has spoken. You vote accordingly.”

(Don't laugh, people. Many crazed right-wingers listen to Laurie Roth, we're told.) Even more crazed crackpot Mormons try daily to get Ms. Roth's telephone number, we're also duly informed.

So.  Are Republicans crazy enough for your tastes, as the 2016 election fast approaches?

Your Blogmeister's take? 2016 Republicans are total looniebirds.

So what say you, Weber County Forum political Wonks?

Standard-Examiner: Awaiting Public Defense Changes, Data Says Prosecutors Paid More Than Defense

One more reason being broke in Utah Totally Sucks!

Via Studebaker Legal Services PC:
County attorneys are involved to varying degrees in the selection of defense counsel, the negotiation of defense attorney compensation, and the oversight of defense counsel performance. Having county attorneys involved in right-to-counsel decisions means that the defender’s courtroom adversary is the one ultimately responsible for whether the defender gets the next appointment or contract.
This shows a clear conflict of interest in justice. In order for defendants to get the right to effective counsel, there must be an independent group overseeing and funding the indigent defense system. Without this independent group, lower class people will continue to be trampled on by the justice system.
The Standard is also all over this story. Read up, Peeps!

House District 29 Candidates Talk Gun Rrights, Legalized Medical Cannabis, More

Vote Angela Urrea, people!

Via Cathy McKitrick of the Standard-Examiner:
FARR WEST and PERRY — In Utah’s House District 29, Republican incumbent Lee Perry seeks a fourth two-year term, and Democrat Angela Urrea believes it’s time for fresh perspectives on Utah’s Capitol Hill.
“I’m trying to give people an alternative,” Urrea said. “Perry is a nice guy ... but I don’t agree with a lot of his positions.”
Her website, angelaforutah.com, points to a perceived disconnect between state lawmakers and the people they represent as the reason she decided to enter the political fray./blockquote
Here's Ms. McKitrick's full story, peeps:
Your blogmeister has the highest regard for the clever, well educated, and street-smart Ms. Urrea. As for her opponent, the dull Mr. Perry, it's time for this bozo to consider retirement, wethinks.

Update 9/27/16 10:55 a.m.: "How bad did it get? At one point, as Trump was groping blindly across the minefields of foreign policy, losing a foot here and a leg there, he announced, apropos of nothing, that “I think my strongest asset, maybe by far, is my temperament.” Clinton smiled sweetly and exclaimed, “Whew, okay!” The audience at Hofstra University, sternly instructed to remain silent throughout the debate, ignored the rules and burst into laughter.
They were laughing at you, Donald, not with you."\

WaPo: This Is How Fascism Comes to America

Don't be a dumbass. Fight fascism in its many creepy forms!

Via the Washington Post (the smarter nemesis of the Grey Lady):

Check out the lede
Republican politicians marvel at how [Trump] has “tapped into” a hitherto unknown swath of the voting public. But what he has tapped into is what the founders most feared when they established the democratic republic: the popular passions unleashed, the “mobocracy.” Conservatives have been warning for decades about government suffocating liberty. But here is the other threat to liberty that Alexis de Tocqueville and the ancient philosophers warned about: that the people in a democracy, excited, angry and unconstrained, might run roughshod over even the institutions created to preserve their freedoms. As Alexander Hamilton watched the French Revolution unfold, he feared in America what he saw play out in France — that the unleashing of popular passions would lead not to greater democracy but to the arrival of a tyrant, riding to power on the shoulders of the people.
