Breaking: Investigators Search Homes of Former Attorneys General John Swallow, Mark Shurtleff - Updated

Hopefully County prosecutors Sim Gill and Troy Rawlings are being extra fastidious, and are merely tying up any possible "loose ends."

Encouraging news this morning conceerning the John Swallow scandal from Northern Utah's dueling big-city newspapers, as both the Trib and the D-News report that "Federal and state agents served warrants Monday on the Sandy houses of former Attorney General John Swallow and his predecessor, Mark Shurtleff":
For those of us sitting on the edges of our seats these past eighteen months awaiting the filing of actual criminal charges these matters, and wondering about the timeliness of these seemingly belated warrant service procedures, we'll just offer this:

Hopefully County prosecutors Sim Gill and Troy Rawlings are being extra fastidious, and are merely tying up any possible "loose ends."

Update 6/4/14 7:00 a.m.:  In the aftermath of Monday's warrant service, Mr. Shurtleff is raising "holy hell":
"There are certain things that you have to do when you go into an area that is unfamiliar to you" "This is what every citizen out there is subjected to when it comes down." "He [Shurtleff] has a pretty good idea of what's involved here," responds Salt Lake County prosecutor Sim Gill.

Turnabout's a bitch, ainnit?

Don't let the cat get your tongues, O Gentle Ones.

.don't you think they would have time to get rid of "evidence" by now?

Yep! Of course, there may be inferences which could be reasonably drawn due to the absence of documents which might be "conspicuously" missing.

On KSL NewsRadio, Mark Shurtleff is ripping law enforcement for searching his home while he was not home last night.

Because you know, he couldn't see this coming from a year away...

Interesting perspective from ever-savvy SLC trial lawyer Ed Flint::

"Shurtleff and Swallow subjected to search warrants: likelihood of finding any evidence at this point is minimal, but that's not why warrants are served this late in the game. It's the prosecution showing the public that they are close to charging these crooks, and to publicly humiliate them, just like they did to so many others in their careers. Awaiting the cameras rolling for the handcuffed perp-walk of Shurtleff for the Karma to come full circle."

Possibly, Mr. Flint, but there are two other possibilities: (a) supposedly intelligent well-educated people engaged in criminal conduct have, on a number of ocassions, kept incriminitating information they should not have. (All together now, can we say "Richard Nixon"?) If --- note, I said if --- Utah's two previous AGs were engaged in criminal conduct, they may not have scrubbed all their records as thoroughly as perhaps they should have. And (b) , if they have, then evidence of the scrbbing can itself become evidence of nefarious intent, if not itself criminal conduct, and evidence of the scrubbing may have been what the searchers were after.

Re: celebrity perp-walks. I'm of two minds about them. They can be used to humiliate before trial or conviction has occured, creating in the public record images that can never be erased upon aquittal. . On the other hand, camera-free surrenderings for celebrities rubs me the wrong way too. If perp-walks are ok for John Doe, why should Celebrity Name get a pass? Plus, live by the camera and limelight, die by them too, seems to me. As I said, of two minds on this.

Exactly right, Bob!

Maybe Shurtleffs garage was filled with copies of his book that was allegeldy sold for campaign donations. I am also curious if any evidence relating to Ogdens very own "Envision Utah" campaign solication will be uncovered.

In regards to the "perp walk" give these two defendants the same treatment as someone who robs the local convenience store. Justice should not recognize or give greater opportunity to avoid being embarassed than a petty croinal.

He may want to rethink his Dirty Harry analogy. As I recall, the guys Dirty Harry went after were generally guilty as sin.

I noticed on the Deseret News comment section several people complained that this si a purely partisan investigation. i really enjoy reading what the uninformed think of the investigation. Even when several others pointed out that the initial investigation was authorized by the GOP dominated House and that Mr. Gill is a Democrat and Mr. Rawlings the other county attornyd is a Republican.
