Fox 13 News: Ogden Lawmaker Proposes Sex Ed Class for Parents

It'll also be interesting to see whether House Rep. Wright's HB 363 arises from the legislative dustbin again in the 2013 legislative session, with Senator Reid's possible new "companion legislation" in tow

In the wake of Governor Herbert's veto of Utah House Rep. Bill Wright's HB363, the knucklehead sex ed bill which "would have prohibited Utah teachers from instructing students about contraceptives, premarital sex or homosexuality," and ultimately provoked irate Utah citizens by the thousands to storm the gates of the Governor's office and demand the Herbert drive a stake through that ill-conceived legislation's heart, there's more legislative activity on the sex-ed front, as one local  "Capitol Hill Critter," Ogden's own Senator Stuart Reid, announces new legislation designed to teach parents of school aged children about the "birds and the bees."  No, we are not making this up. Click the link for the full story, which includes a dandy bonus video clip:
Yesiree... we agree... it would be great if there was a formal way that parents out there in the Utah backwoods could "learn where them babies come from."

In this connection, we'll also link this additional online story, where Martha Kempner, columnist for the Reproductive Health Reality Check website gives Senator Reid's proposed new bill the once over:
Ms. Kempner's summary paragraphs provide the "drift." It's a savvy take, as far as we're concerned:
Many in the state opposed the bill, noting that the law already required schools to stress abstinence and arguing that such a law usurped parental authority. Thousands of residents wrote letters to the governor, 40,000 signed a petition asking him to veto the bill, and hundreds protested the bill at the state Capitol. Ultimately, Governor Gary Herbert vetoed the legislation, saying in a tweet: “I cannot sign a bill that deprives parents of their choice.”
Not only did parents in Utah rally against stricter sex education rules, nearly 95 percent of parents choose to send their children to sex education programs despite the administrative hurdle posed by the state's opt-in policy.  While one might assume this means that parents in the state (like parents around the country) want their children to receive sexuality education courses from trained professionals in schools, Reid’s take away is that parents are simply scared to do it themselves: “I think often the parents choose not to opt out for their children out of sex ed in the schools because they’re uncomfortable providing that training.”
Personally, I’m fascinated by Reid’s new approach.  There is not a sexuality educator I know who wouldn’t jump at the chance to ensure that parents had accurate information about sexuality and provide them with strategies for talking with their kids about sex.  Most of them would probably agree with Reid that many parents avoid discussing sex with their kids, “either because they don’t know how to do it or it’s sensitive, or they need training how best to approach that with their children.”
Of course, our hope as sexuality educators would be that once parents had this training, they would not only be more comfortable having conversations about sex with their kids at home but they would be eager for their kids to learn more about such important topics from trained professionals in school.
If Reid’s bill manages to pass, it will be interesting what happens after parents attend the sexuality education seminars.
Yes,  that'll be interesting indeed.

It'll also be fascinating to see whether House Rep. Wright's HB 363 arises from the legislative dustbin again in the 2013 legislative session, with Senator Reid's possible companion legislation in tow.

Remember, folks, the right wing puritan faction in the state legislature never gives up.  We'll therefor be watching closely to see whether HB 363 will "enjoy" a reprise, once the pesky 2012 election is out of the way, and elected Utah government officials can once again "safely" put their Utah constituents back on "ignore."

Don't let the cat get your tongues, folks.

Salt Lake Tribune: Coalition of Utah News Media Serves Public Interest

Democracy works, folks... Use it or Lose It
And we know you pay attention, and so does the Legislature. We heard and saw your response to HB477. Your voice was loud and very clear, and so were your actions. You made us all pay attention. You said, "Don’t turn out the lights. Don’t hide what you do in our name."
When citizens make their voices heard like you did, they live up to the finest traditions and responsibilities of democracy. I hope you feel proud of what you accomplished. It was remarkable. Truly remarkable.

Nancy Conway - Editor, Salt Lake Tribune
Editor’s column: Coalition of Utah news media serves public interest
March 17, 2012

The response was both a concerted campaign by the professionals in the Utah Media Coalition (including The Salt Lake Tribune) and a popular outcry by a great many others, all urging that the law be repealed. In less than a month, it was.

Salt Lake Tribune Editorial
A bright light
March 18, 2012

As the 2012 legislative slips into the realm of history, we'll put the spotlight on two notable Salt Lake Tribune editorials published over the past three days, praising the efforts of everyone from the Utah Media Coalition to individual Utah lumpencitizens for successfully monitoring proposed 2012 legislative bills for accessibility and openness over the full course of the now-adjourned session:
No doubt about it. When withering public scrutiny propels a wacky Utah County GOP legislator like Senator Curt Bramble to behave in such a manner as to actually earn a "Bright Light" award from the media for commitment to open government, that's progress for Utah Democracy, wethinks.

Neck-snapping WCF segue: And while we're on the general topic of what happens politically when steely-eyed Utah lumpencizens speak their minds en masse, to demand sensible and citizen-responsive government solutions to lame and "citizens-be-damned" legislative screw-ups, let's not forget what happened barely three days ago with House Rep. Bill Wright's knuckleheaded HB363:
Democracy works, folks, even here (Utah) the "reddest of all red (neck) states.

Democracy: Use it or lose it.

Breaking: Herbert Vetoes Sex-ed bill, Says It Constricts Parental Choice

The lumpencitizens complained by the thousands, and Governor Gary paid heed... imagine that!

Great news from the Governor's Office this morning, from which the Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune and the Standard-Examiner all report that Utah Governor Gary Herbert has listened to the folks complaining about the idiocy of the 2012 Utah bill which "would have prohibited Utah teachers from instructing students about contraceptives, premarital sex or homosexuality" and wielded his veto pen late Friday, driving a stake through the heart of nutcase House Rep. Bill Wright's HB363 once and for all:
The lumpencitizens complained by the thousands, and Governor Gary paid heed.

Imagine that!

Chalk it up as yet another victory for steely-eyed, grass-roots citizen activism.

Wednesday Morning Weber County Forum News Roundup

A few interesting items assembled this morning whilst Googling, on an otherwise S-L-O-O-W news day

Here are four (count-em 4) interesting items for our readers' consumption this morning, submitted in the interest of inspiring a little WCF discussion:

1) Just as predicted by WCF Reader Official City Hall Souse yesterday morning, and subsequently confirmed by Dan Schroeder during last night's marathon City Council Live Blogging session, the Standard-Examiner now reports that 26-year OPD veteran Mike Ashment has been selected by the Caldwell administration, and was last night appointed by the City Council, to fill the permanent position of Ogden City Chief of Police, which has been vacant since Chief Jon Greiner's 12/28/12 "retirement":
Looks like a great pick to us; but what say our readers about this?

2) The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Senator Mike Lee is up to his old tricks, i.e., basically "[t]hreatening to hold his breath until he turns blue and faints, falling down on the floor screeching and squalling and pounding his fists and feet," like a two-year-old who didn't get his way:
Can we see by a show of hands how many of our gentle readers are proud to have this guy representing the State of Utah in the U.S. Senate?

3) The Standard provides this thought provocative Letter to the Editor, for our Weber County Forum friends who are planning to attend tomorrow night's GOP Neighborhood Caucuses:
We're no big fans of Orrin Hatch, we'll disclose, but remember Hatch's Senate seniority. If tomorrow night's GOP caucus attendees are short sighted enough to replace Orrin with Davis County corporatist Dan Liljenquist, or any other unproven newcomer for that matter, we'll be stuck with yet another "freshman" Senate "new kid on the block" (like Mike Lee); and you can bet your boots the chances of the Hill Air Force Base local economic "cash cow" will have a heightened chance of being placed on the BRAC "chopping block." Something to think about for would-be Weber County GOP political apparatchiks... at least those who DO actually have that capacity.

4) The Tribune caries an informative story this morning, outlining the differences between nut-case House Rep. Bill Wright, R-Holden's ill-conceived HB363 and the current law:
Gotta say we loved this Bill Wright quote, by the way, "Homosexuality does not relate to sexuality. It’s a whole different thing." This Wright guy obviously knows what he's talking about, right?

This idiotic bill hasn't been signed into law by Governor Herbert by the way folks; and "the governor likely won’t make a decision on whether to sign the bill into law until next week," the Trib reports. In the meantime, angry Utah citizens are raising quite a ruckus about this bill:

"[The bill] has spurred much of the opposition to HB363 — including veto requests from the Utah PTA, the Utah Education Association and nearly 40,000 people who had signed an online petition as of Tuesday afternoon," according to Trib reporter Lisa Schencker.

In that connection, we'll helpfully provide links to both the online petition and Governor Herbert's web-based email contact page, for those of you who haven't yet gotten around to giving the Good Guv an "earful" quite yet:
Remember folks; be firm... but extra polite.

Utah Post-2012 Legislative Session Wrap-up

Sign the Petition... Consider this an early opportunity to accomplish something useful and positive this morning folks.

Now that the 2012 Utah legislative session has drawn to a close, here's a wrap-up of the most important legislative "achievements" of the now completed of the latest round of legislative "madness," gleaned straight from the pages of the Salt Lake Tribune and Standard-Examiner morning editions:

Salt Lake Tribune:
Standard-Examiner:
And for those readers looking for a little post 2012 Regular Session activist action, the Trib also reports that "[t]housands of people have signed an online petition urging Utah’s governor to veto a bill lawmakers passed this week to prohibit instruction about contraceptive use during sex education classes and allow schools to drop such classes altogether":
Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the Trib neglects to provide a link to the actual petition; so we'll pick up where the Trib left off.

In that connection, and for the benefit of those readers who agree with us that HB363 is possibly the most irresponsible legislation of the 2012 session, click the link below to view and Sign the petition that the Trib merely mentions, urging Governor Herbert thusly: "Governor Herbert, please veto HB363. Our children need to be given enough information about sex and contraception that they are able to make good decisions concerning sex":
Consider this an early opportunity to accomplish something useful and positive this morning folks.

Update 3/11/12 9:00 a.m.: The SL-Trib editorial board provides another good 2012 legislative session summary this morning:

Standard-Examiner Editorial: OUR VIEW: Pols' Sexual Hang Ups

The Standard knocked this one clean outta the park, wethinks

If Utah state Rep. Bill Wright, R-Holden, and 44 of his House colleagues have a problem dealing with sex, can't they find counseling for their hang ups? We don't care what they do to themselves, but why do they have to inflict their dysfunctions on Utah teens in public schools?

Standard-Examiner Editorial
OUR VIEW: Pols' sexual hang ups
February 24, 2021

What Wright and his cronies don't get is that responsible parents talk about sexual issues with their children. These parents will continue to talk with their children even if Wright's inane HB363 becomes law. Public schools, through sex education classes, educate many students who would otherwise never learn the facts of life, or worse, learn it from bad influences in the streets.

Standard-Examiner Editorial
OUR VIEW: Pols' sexual hang ups
February 24, 2021
Top-flight editorial in the Standard-Examiner online edition this morning, adding a craftsman-like followup to Friday's Weber County Forum article:
Remarkable, innit, that we're still having these "Victorian Era" conversations, twelve years into the 21st century?

The Standard knocked this one clean outta the park, wethinks.

Shame on Weber County's House Reps. Brad Dee, Brad Galvez, Jeremy Peterson, Dixon Pitcher and Ryan Wilcox, who cast "aye" votes on this idiotic bill, and thereby knuckled under to the wackos of the Eagle Forum and their ilk, who continue to feverishly do their level best to drag Utah's already backward culture even further rearward toward the prudish, head-in-the-sand "virtue" of their 19th century, self-delusional "glory days."

Salt Lake Tribune: Utah House Passes Bill to Allow Schools to Skip Sex Ed

With the 2012 General Election coming up fast, we hope all WCF readers will write this all down so they don't forget it

"We’ve been culturally watered down to think we have to teach about sex, about having sex and how to get away with it, which is intellectually dishonest." "Why don’t we just be honest with them upfront that sex outside marriage is devastating?"

Rep. Bill Wright, R-Holden
Utah House passes bill to allow schools to skip sex ed
February 23, 2012

"You cannot speak of abstinence without talking to students about methods of birth control that are not certain, about protecting oneself from [sexually transmitted diseases] and all the things that can happen in a negative sense to a young person who engages in sex." "It’s really immoral not to teach kids about what the consequences are."

Rep. Carol Spackman Moss, D-Holladay
Utah House passes bill to allow schools to skip sex ed
February 23, 1012
Eye opening story this morning from the Salt Lake Tribune, reporting that "A bill to allow Utah schools to drop sex education classes — and prohibit instruction in the use of contraception in those that keep the courses — moved significantly closer to becoming law Wednesday. The House passed HB363 by a 45-28 vote after a late-afternoon debate that centered largely on lawmakers’ differing definitions of morality":
Curious about how your Weber County Utah House Representatives delegation voted on this bill? Get the raw lowdown here:
Breaking out the votes by individual House members, we find that Representatives Brad Dee, Brad Galvez, Jeremy Peterson, Dixon Pitcher and Ryan Wilcox fall into the camp of those whose views of morality seem to center on the philosophy that ignorance is bliss, and that it's just fine for students in Utah public schools to run the risk of unwanted teen pregnancies and STDs, without the benefits of any formal instruction whatsoever regarding such matters.

A Weber County Forum Tip O' the Hat to Utah House grownups Gage Froerer and Richard Greenwood on the other hand, who plainly recognize that the real immorality is failing "to teach kids about what [the facts and] consequences are."

With the 2012 General Election coming up fast, we hope all WCF readers will write this all down so they don't forget it.

Don't let the cat get your tongues...
