Just to keep the conversations going on another slow news day, we'll turn our attention to this tantaliziing Op Ed piece from Standard-Examiner reader Valerie Philips, who contributes her 2/7/17 letter/op ed:

Here's her tantalizing  lede and sodden question, Peeps:

Breathing clean air is critical for every Utahn. One would think our state leaders would want to do everything possible to clean up the gray haze all along the Wasatch Front.
So it's hard to figure out why Rep. Jeremy Peterson of Ogden is pushing a bill to get rid of the tax credit for homeowners who install rooftop solar panels, HB 23. Why would he want to choke out Utah's solar industry, when there are days that our children can't go outside to play because the air is too filthy to breathe?

Mr.Peterson looks like such a clean-cut Mormon boy, no? So what's the deal with his love for dirty fossil-fuel, and hatred for clean, renewable energy?

Update 2/13/17 10:00 p.m.:  We contacted Mr. Peterson's 2018 Democratic opponent, the smart and wonderful Ms. Kathie Darby, concerning Mr. Peterson's decision to pass a bill killing the existing rooftop solar exemption which we mentioned above, and here's her response:

My first question, why was this credit ever appropriated from the Utah Education Fund? This does not make sense to me. What does it have to do with teacher pay and class size?
I would not discontinue this credit. Solar panels help to produce clean energy. Our air quality has been the worst in the nation this winter. Why would we go against any sort of incentive that helps to make our State cleaner and more energy efficient?

Rep. Jeremy Peterson, R-Ogden, called the action, which drew an estimated 6,000 participants on a snowy day to the capitol, “The Potpourri Passion Protest” in a blog post that he later removed.
“I am sure this won’t be the last protest we see at the Capitol before the Legislature finishes its work in March,” Peterson wrote. “Lets (sic) hope the next one features symbols other than crudely named knit-caps.”

Weber County 2014 Election Roundup: The Standard Excels Again, With Three New 2014 General Election Stories

Bottom line: Utah is ripe for political change, wethinks, so long as ALL registered voters to actually show up to vote

We gotta say the Standard-Examiner is doing a bang-up job of covering the November Utah General Elections this year. Here are the latest SE 2014 election stories which popped up within the last 24 hours.

1) Seems that House District 10 GOP incumbent Jeremy Peterson is taking liberties with the truth, shall we say, with respect to his 2014 Democratic Party opponent, Steve Olsen,  Peterson already has an advantage in District Nine, of course, due to 2008 Leg District gerrymandering by the EVIL 2008 Utah Legislature:

Our take? Seems that this little twit, Peterson, feels the heat of a smarter and more competent Demo candidate (Steve Olsen), who's breathing down Peterson's "skinny" neck, in this race.

Sodden question, why would Mr. Peterson sink so low as to actively misrepresent Mr. Olsen's stance in this? Here's a helpful hint.  Democratic professional engineer candidate Steve Olsen probably owns 20 or 30 IQ points over this clownish and shabby GOP real estate salesman, and Peterson senses that his House 9 "gig is up."

We urge you to vote Steve Olsen on this one, folks!

Eye opening story this morning from the Salt Lake Tribune, reporting that "A bill to allow Utah schools to drop sex education classes — and prohibit instruction in the use of contraception in those that keep the courses — moved significantly closer to becoming law Wednesday. The House passed HB363 by a 45-28 vote after a late-afternoon debate that centered largely on lawmakers’ differing definitions of morality":

Breaking out the votes by individual House members, we find that Representatives Brad Dee, Brad Galvez, Jeremy Peterson, Dixon Pitcher and Ryan Wilcox fall into the camp of those whose views of morality seem to center on the philosophy that ignorance is bliss, and that it's just fine for students in Utah public schools to run the risk of unwanted teen pregnancies and STDs, without the benefits of any formal instruction whatsoever regarding such matters.

A Weber County Forum Tip O' the Hat to Utah House grownups Gage Froerer and Richard Greenwood on the other hand, who plainly recognize that the real immorality is failing "to teach kids about what [the facts and] consequences are."

Interesting remarks on your site from Saturday. Its obvious to me that nobody has a clue who I am or where I stand. Interestingly, one of the commentators on the article emailed me demanding information. I invited them to call me so we could chat. I haven't heard from anyone.

You might find my blog insightful... or boring. It's me. I am a real estate uber-nerd.

I am also definitely NOT a minion of the mayor. I have spoken to him four times in the last four years. I know him less than I know the guy that changes my oil.

Just thought these are things you should know since there seemed to be A LOT of erroneous (and some downright mean-spirited) conclusions drawn on little if any information.

Editor's addendum: One of our gentle readers sent us an interesting 2002 Weber Sentinal article, which is quite relevant to the Legislative District 9 election discussion. Historically, Mr. Peterson's relationship with The G-Train has been anything but cozy:

From that article we find this fantastic quote, from Godfrey loyalist corporo-fascist party apparatchik Sue Wilkerson, referring to Mr. Peterson:

“People like to live where they have a sense of history. We have
these laws to protect people from themselves because they are
not smart enough to make the right decisions on their own.
Property rights are no different. If they don’t like the rules they
can move to Mexico. The guidelines should be 10 times
tougher,” Wilkerson said.
About Peterson, she said, “He blatantly chose not to follow the
rules. Had he applied for a permit like required, he would have
been guided through the process.”
When asked about the constitutional rights of the property
owner, Wilkerson said, “I’m not a close study of the
Constitution. It’s illegal to steal. Knowingly breaking this law is
the same as stealing.”

We'll add that we've taken the time to discuss with Mr. Peterson his relationship with the Godfreyite Ms. Wilkerson, and that we're satisfied it is confined to real estate business, and not politics.
