Standard-Examiner: Harrison Boulevard Wide Enough for Now

We'll chalk this up as a victory for Ogden City self-determination, and a defeat for Utah's Stalinesque central planning transportation bureaucracy, we guess

Good news for Ogden East Bench neighborhood preservation activists this morning, as the Standard-Examiner announces the Wasatch Front Regional Council's abandonment of its knuckle-headed Harrison Boulevard widening plan. Here's the lead from this morning's Mitch Shaw story:
CLEARFIELD — The Wasatch Front Regional Council has made some changes to its 30-year regional transportation plan in the Top of Utah.
After receiving public comments from government officials and area residents, WFRC is no longer planning to widen Harrison Boulevard in Ogden from 20th Street to U.S. 89.
Now, the plan calls for only operational improvements on the road from 20th Street to Country Hills Drive in Ogden, and widening the road from four lanes to six from Country Hills Drive to U.S. 89

This is good news. Note that once again the public won, and the "build and bail" developers lost. The comments people made against widening Harrison made a difference.

On another subject, this video clip is really good. If a person can understand it, it tells everything one needs to know about the economy and what is wrong with America. For those who don't understand, Keynes (in black suit) is the bad guy socialist planner and Hayek (in beige suit) is the good guy free marketeer. Guess who wins. Guess who is the popular one. It is very apt.

BTW, I don't like the new posting. There is no way to "preview."

not only is Harrison wide enough its rarely busy enough to warrant a widening project. http://indieogdenutah.blogspot.com/

Good point. Perhaps its time for a City Council sponsored "Road Narrowing Project" on Harrison.

Pay no attention to "Michaela. " She's a dumb broad with bad manners, who showed no hesitatition to lodge a lame post on WCF, and then to follow it up with a link to her own equally lame blog.

Web netiquette ain't half what it used to be, sadly...

We'll 'endeavor to persevere
,' however.

Exactly right, Michaela. I live a block above Harrison, and I take my life in my hands every time I cross the present 4-Lane de-facto Ogden Expressway around 24th and Harrison to "get my ears lowered" by the Dee's Barber Shop Barber... Barber Bruce @ the old Hospital Drug location. This happens even if I use the crosswalks and the walk/don't walk feature.

But they still plan to increase 4 lanes up to 6 between Country Hills and 89. That should cause plenty of disruption unless it's just painting new lanes on the existing blacktop. I see this as only a partial victory.

Excellent observation, Rosemary! What's the point in widening Harrison between Country Hills Drive and Hwy 89 anyway? There's already a bottleneck @ the Harrison/89 junction; and a bone-headed move like that will just move the neck-down traffic congestion only a few blocks north.

Yes... I believe you're right. Those of us who oppose the encroachment of expressway arteries anywhere in or near our town(s) need to consider standing fast in solidarity against such expansion projects all the way south to Hwy 89!

And what say our gentle readers about this?
