Open Thread

I'll be busy today working on a new website that I have under construction.

It's something of a slo-o-o-o-o-o-w news day, so I thought I'd set up an open thread. If you wish to comment on the rec center project or Tuesday's election, please continue to comment on the several previous threads. If you'd like to open up new topics, please feel free to do it here.

I did catch this Deseret News article this morning, addressing the difficulties Utah disabled veterans experience, in dealing with the V.A. benefits program. This is a pet subject of mine, as I'm a Vietnam-era veteran myself. Although I've been lucky enough not to have had to rely upon V.A. benefits, I have many friends who've struggled to receive the benefits to which they're entitled. Have any of our gentle readers experienced similar problems? This is probably something to think about on Veterans Day, methinks.

And what else is on your minds, as we move into the weekend, gentle readers?

Dear Mr. Glasmann:

If the Council votes later this month to approve the Rec. Center, is that the Last Word? Will Ogden then be stuck with the endless financial consequences?

Regarding this tragic fire at Canyon Cove---I heard a news clip where a firefighter said something like, (and I paraphrase,): "We couldn't get water on it right away because we had to save all those people."

Does anyone know if this is a procedural thing or a manpower one? I don't know if the death could have been averted at all, but would really like to hear if, from the firefighters' perspective, they could have used more people or equipment. Could the damage and tragedy have been less had there been resources to both fight the fire and save people at the same time? Or is this not the way it is done?

Has anyone seen anything official about prop 1, the 911 dispatch center tax vote? The only thing I saw was in the standard on Wed and that said it didn't have all the votes in.

The 911 vote passed.

As for the fire, 2 men on a 5 man truck can't be to anyone's advantage....the Firefighters are at risk because nobody has their backs and thus the public is at rist because the standard method of operation has been changed due to the cut in manpower and equipment. That's not to say that that's the reason for the fire's tragic ending, but we have just seen a good example of what our Firefighters are faced with due to shortfalls.

2 men on a 5 man truck is appalling, as are the procedural changes due to lack of manpower, ec.

This is simply not acceptable.

I think it was incredible that all but one person got out of that alive. But me and everyone else giving the firefighters a well-deserved pat on the back for this doesn't cut it. They don't need pats on the back. They need what they need to make an already hazardous occupation as safe as it can be, not only for them, but for all of us.

What's it going to take?

Is there anything out there that the firefighters have prepared that states clearly what they need? Maybe this latest could be added to it as an example and this could be remedied.

Just because they are capable of working under these conditions is No Reason that we should expect them to, no reason at all.

Mr. Glassman I didn't vote for you to go to city hall to become an obstructionist. I hope that you will go with an open mind and not with your mind made up to oppose the mayor in everything like Jesse and wicks. It's one thing to be your own man and to think independantly but I hope you will not be another "NO" in the council.

I think if you read Glasmann's platform, or heard him at the various forums and debates, you wouldn't have much to worry about. His position is one of having an OPEN MIND, researching the facts, adding in the people's input and letting that take him to making an "informed vote." It was this that allowed him to get endorsements from both Bob Geiger, pro gondola and the Sierra Club, anti gondola.

Glasmann comes with a wealth of business experience, formal education, a little stint in the Marine Corps and a whole lot of common sense. I worked with him on his campaign and not only liked what I heard but saw him engage in the aforementioned many times.

I have no worries that he'll perform, nor do 3000 + voters. The guy's for real.
