Standard-Examiner: Ogden "Incentivizes" New Showroom for Auto Dealer

What's with John Watson getting RDA tax credits?

By: Smaatguy

Speaking of handouts... What's with John Watson getting RDA tax credits? Looking at the time frame it looks like he's getting them after he decided to expand. Like he's going to bug out of town and buy new real estate and build new without $10 to $20k credits?
What a waste of taxpayer money. Watson planned that expansion long ago. Now Westland and the rest will also want to suck on the taxpayer teat.

Comments, anyone?

Smaatguy is entirely correct.  When a city opens up Corporate welfare to people like Kevin Garn, it's only natural that long-time businesssmen, such as John Watson would be interested in "similar concessions."

Truly we live in  the Age of Euphemism.  It's a subsidy, seems to me, plain and simple.  Why pussyfoot around that with barbarisms like "incentivize"?

Here's the ethical problem with such one-business subsidies, from a public policy POV:  by what standard that will stand up to scrutiny and not require lengthy nose-holding can you separate those businesses the public good demands  be subsidized, and those businesses the public good not be subsidized?

PS: we ought to have a little sympathy for poor city councils and mayors.  In these beggar-your-neighbors days of cities raiding neighboring cities [and states states] by offering businesses larger and larger subsidies of one sort or another to lure them to more, or to convince them not to move, I can understand government bodies being reluctant to be the first kid in the neighborhood to say "No.  We won't."

Congrats, Smaatguy! You've revealed the whole problem with Godfrey-Style Crony Capitalism.  Once the first corporate handout goes out to morons like Gadi Leshem, companies like  John Watson Chevrolet, and Westland Ford will soon be asking, "Where's Mine."

I guess the federal handout to Government Motors...er..General Motors wasn't enough eh?  Maybe I should threaten to move my business out of Ogden and I'll get a handout too!!!  I chose to be in this town and didn't need or want a handout
