Recently, an LDS Church leader told me that there was a significant difference between the performance levels of Utah missionaries in the Language Training Centers and that of missionaries from other places. He bluntly asked me what I was going to do about education in Utah. (I suggested a small comment at LDS Conference might be helpful.)

The funding numbers are grim. Of 50 states, Utah spends just $6,206 per child, dead last. The national average is $10,608 and our neighbor Wyoming is spending $15,897. Our classrooms are the most crowded in America. 28.7 children per classroom, with the rest of the country at 15.7. Can you imagine trying to teach geometry to a classroom with 38 or 40 students? Utah kindergartens average 28.3 children.
Our teachers are the poorest paid in America. They get $2,397 per student while the national average is $4,053.

Here's the political downside, people:
We'll be eagerly awaiting that "small comment at the next LDS Conference," which indeed "might be helpful."
One thing's for sure: a lone Utah Democratic Senator like Dabakis won't be able to pull this off by himself.

There might be a comment at LDs general conference about educating Utah school children. However it will not help this legislative session. The next LDS conference is April and the 2015 Utah legislative sessions begin January 26 2015 and adjourns March 12 2015

Can we say lottery? Not building a new prison? Legalize marijuana? Not spen $75 million to bring in a new convention hotel?
Or how about taking the whole elected Republican contingent in the state, have some of our pointy headed bean counters at State headquarters figure out their true value, then sell them for what they think they are worth. The markup would be so immense that Utah citizens would never have to pay any kind of taxes again.
How about our government's thinking first before wasting millions or more on lawsuits that cannot be won. Same sex marriage, take over federal lands, fighting Medicaid expansion come immediately to mind.
I don't think the tax hike is opposed so much for schools as that our State income taxes are high already. Especially high because we get very little in return.
How about we throttle back on the cost of the facilities.... Sick of hearing how cost effective they design and build them when the private schools typically build for at least one third less.....monuments to egos and good old boy clubs.
How about cutting back on the millions of dollars in state corporate tax benefits to new employer's. Oh, were talking Utah where welfare is the bane of the poor not the rich. Of course many of those businesses only pay minimum wage anyway so who needs a quality education?
How about those who crank out so many kids start paying more of the cost to educate them? Under our tax system the more kids a couple have the less they pay in taxes. The people with no or few kids end up paying for the kids of the prolific breeders.
OT, but looks like the good old boy club is in full swing with Weber County bucking up $90k to have good ole Stuart Reid consult on Economic Development...how long until old Matt pops up within County doings??? off to the barf bucket
