Standard-Examiner Guest Op-ed: Old and New Mayors Have Both Accepted Tainted Contributions

If you were Mike Caldwell in this circumstance, what would you do with Gadi Leshem's grubby $3,000 campaign "donation?"

When we questioned Caldwell about accepting the $3,000, he said he did so because he didn't want to send the message that he was unwilling to work with Leshem. As a result, he is sending the message to everyone else in Ogden that you can't "work with" someone in this town unless money changes hands.

Dan Schroeder - Std-Ex Guest Editorial
Old and new mayors have both accepted tainted contributions

There are two things that are important in politics,” Mark Hanna, the great Republican kingmaker of the late 19th century, once said. “The first thing is money, and I can’t remember what the second one is.

David D. Kirkpatrick - New York Times
Does Corporate Money Lead to Political Corruption?
January 23, 2010

Chewy Standard-Examiner guest editorial up on the S-E website this afternoon, by Ogden Ethics Project Director Dan Schroeder, referring to the $10,000 campaign donation which Friend of Matt Godfrey (FOM) Gadi Leshem coughed up to the Matthew Godfrey mayoral campaign in 2007. Professor Schroeder then follows it up by reeling off the litany of inexplicable Godfrey "favors" subsequently heaped by the Godfrey Administyration upon Leshem in the election aftermath.

Professor Schroeder then, indirectly at least, hints at what we consider to be the pregnant question: "Should our newly-inagurated Mike Caldwell return the Gadi Leshem $3,000 donation which was contributed to Mike Caldwell's "campaign" on the day BEFORE (not after) the November 8, 2011 Ogden Municipal election?"

Check Out Dan's full Guest Commentary here:
So what about it, Gentle readers? Will the Caldwell Administration be permanently "tainted" by its ill-considered acceptance of this campaign donation bribe "gift?" Is Professor Schroeder the only one who finds it "remarkable that any politician would openly accept money from such a person (as Leshem)?" Does it remain "clear," as Dan Schroeder suggests, that even upon today's inauguration of Mike Caldwell as Ogden City's new Mayor, "... a mere change in administration won't lessen the need for ethical scrutiny?" Cutting to the chase... if you were Mike Caldwell in this circumstance, what would you do with Gadi's grubby $3,000 campaign "donation?"

So many questions... so few answers...

A Quick Heads Up on Today's Ogden City Council Meetings and Ceremonies - Updated

We'll dedicate this thread of course, to any WCF political wonks who'd like to lodge their comments before, during or after today's various council sessions

Just a quick heads up today's Ogden City Council meetings and ceremonies, wherein newly-elected Ogden City government officials will be inducted and sworn in.

1) The Council has scheduled a Special Council Session today at noon, where, among other things Mayor Mike Caldwell will take the oath of office, and officially commence his 2012-15 mayoral term:
2) The Council will hold a Special Study Session at 5:30 p.m., which will include, among other agenda items, the pre-selection of Council Leadership wia the Council's recently enacted and open government-unfriendly "straw poll" procedure:
3) As a followup to the above Special Session, the Council will conduct its regular Tuesday City Council Meeting at 6:00 p.m., wherein our newly elected City Council members, Gochnour, Hyer and Wicks will be sworn in, and the the results of the above-mentioned council leadership "straw poll" will be formally "ratified" (rubber stamped):
We'll dedicate this thread of course, to any WCF political wonks who'd like to lodge their comments before, during or after today's various council sessions.

Update 1/4/11 7:30 a.m.: The Standard carries the post mayoral inauguration story this morning, which expands upon Dan Schroeder's downthread comment, and reports about Boss Godfrey's ungracious rant, in which he petulantly plays the "victim," blaming his critics for the self-perceived bad consequences of his own unethical and boorish mayoral behavior:
Curiously, Godfrey also complains that the mayor's council chamber seat is situated at the floor level "on the kiddie table over here," rather than up on the elevated council dais.

Unresoved Napoleon Complex, anyone?

Update 1/4/11 8:40 a.m.: The Standard also carries a story reporting on the installation of Ogden City's newly-elected officials from what we'll gently label a less "off kilter" perspective than the one linked above:
Update 1/5/11 9:59 a.m.: The "mayoral induction" Special Council Meeting video is now available for viewing via YouTube:

Standard-Examiner: Godfrey to Head Economic Development Consulting Firm

Boss Godfrey even now positions himself to feed at the public trough

For those Emerald City lumpencitizens who've been wondering what our lame duck Mayor Boss Godfrey will do with himself, after the City Hall screen door slaps him on the backside following tomorrow's induction of Mike Caldwell as Ogden City's new mayor, the Standard-Examiner breaks the suspense with this morning story, reporting that "One Trick Pony Godfrey" will remain in the economic development business, as president of his own "start-up consulting firm after he leaves office Tuesday":
Although Godfrey has repeatedly said he'd be entering the "private sector," Godfrey's distinction between "public" and "private" seems "fuzzy" at best, inasmuch as his business plan appears to depend heavily upon economic development, job creation and crime reduction "services," which would be logically marketed mainly toward "other communities," (besides Ogden?).

"Excited" that his new venture "will give him a chance to practice the [Big Government borrowing and spending] skills he developed while serving 12 years as [Ogden City] mayor," Boss Godfrey thus even now positions himself to feed at the public trough, along with his other "Special Friends":

Godfrey gleefully adds that "the company already has several clients, but declined to elaborate."

Yesiree, folks, we have no doubt that local public officials all across Utah will be eagerly queuing up in droves to learn how to build mountains of public debt, just like Ogden City, once the word gets out that Boss Godfrey has opened his new economic development shop.

We'll be keeping our fingers crossed that Godfrey's prospective client list will not include Mike Caldwell, of course, inasmuch as Ogden's credit card is already pretty much maxed out.

Don't let the cat get your tongues, O Gentle Ones...

Sunday Morning Emerald City News Roundup - Updated

A virtual cornucopia of interesting Weber County Forum-topical stuff

To our great delight, we find a virtual cornucopia of interesting Weber County Forum-topical stuff in this morning's Standard-Examiner... just what the doctor ordered to kick off the discussion on the first day of the year 2012, wethinks. Just so's we can squeeze it all onto our morning article page, we'll be brief:

1) Mr. Schwebke provides an excellent Mike Caldwell profile piece, as Caldwell prepares for Tuesday's mayoral induction ceremony:
We gotta admit that Mayor-elect Caldwell is already scoring major style points with your WCF blogmeister, even though he hasn't even been sworn in yet. First he demonstrates his commitment to pursuing Ogden City's best interests in re: the Jon Greiner Hatch Act Money Pit; and now Standard-Examiner readers learn that our new mayor is even now ready to deep-six yet another crackpot Boss Godfrey scheme:
We'll offer at this juncture that we're cautiously optimistic that our new Mayor Mike Caldwell may be able to temper his "economic development focus" with a little old fashioned common sense.

2) Trentelman provides a stunning example of ambivalence this morning with his own weasly-weak-in- the-knees variation on the tried and true "keeps the trains running on time" theme. We've taken liberties with the column headline, we confess.
Full disclosure here, Mr. Trentelman! No, Weber County Forum doesn't "hate" Boss Godfrey, although we do agree with you, Mr. Trentelman, that Godfrey often behaves like a jerk.

3) Combine an irretrievably Slavish Godfreyite Lemming, a copy of Bartlett's Quotations and a flea-market thesaurus, and here's what you get from one of the most prominent jackasses in Weber County: A lavishly tiresome, tedious and tortuous (and entirely un-ambivalent) Boss Godfrey tilting, SE guest editorial lovefest:
Gotta say we loved this one:
Vicious blogs defame. He who perseveres is called arrogant and is vituperated for failure to listen to obstructionists.
Do you suppose, Gentle Readers, that Steve the Godfrey Lemming may actually be referring to we of Weber County Forum, when he makes reference to "obstructionists" within his above thesaurus-driven and highly indigestible word soup? LOL! And here we'd heretofore thought ourselves to be only mere "naysayers," Dang!

Update 1/1/12 3:50 p.m.: Oops! Here's something we missed earlier, from one of the hands-down funniest folks writing for the internet or print media, or whatever:
Sorry about the inadvertent omission folks. Enjoy!

Final 2011 Ogden City Municipal Election Financial Disclosure Statements

We'll be sitting on the edges of our seats waiting to find out whether Boss Godfrey-style crony capitalism will remain a feature of Ogden City government under Mike Caldwell's new administration

Thanks to a tip from another sharp-eyed and alert Weber County Forum reader, we're reminded that the final 2011 Ogden City Municipal Elections financial disclosure statements were due for filing on December 8, 2011. We've accordingly updated our archives pages to reflect these new filings, which are now available online. You can view these documents here, imbedded within each individual candidate page:
Among these document there is one which we found to be particularly interesting, which reports a total of $3,000 in last minute donations to Mayor-elect Mike Caldwell from two Gadi Leshem-controlled entities in Chatsworth, California, i.e., Riverwalk Company LP and Ogden Riverfront Development Company LP:
Although we're aware that Mr. Leshem may have recently fallen upon difficult economic circumstances, it's also apparent that Mr. Leshem recognises that the name of the political game in Ogden City may very well remain "Pay to Play," even upon the departure of Mayor Godfrey.

Will Boss Godfrey-style crony capitalism be a feature of Ogden City government under Mike Caldwell's new administration?

We'll be sitting on the edges of our seats waiting to find out.

A Couple of Weber County Forum-topical Matters Set for Tonight's Ogden City Council Regular Meeting Agenda

Certification of 2011 Municipal General Election results and Revisions to Water Utility Service Fees are on tonight's Council calender

Here's a brief heads-up concerning a couple of Weber County Forum-topical matters which appear on the agenda for tonight's Ogden City Council Regular Meeting:

1) The City Council is ready to calender the certification of the November 8 Ogden Municipal Election results in what appears to be record time, by our book:

*** 6. Common Consent:
*** c. Board of Canvass for the 2011 Municipal General Election. Consideration of the certification of the results of the 2011 Municipal General Election. (Set Board of Canvass for November 22, 2011 – voice vote)
Hopefully the Council will be able to have the process all wrapped up by November 22d.

2) We've had some earlier WCF discussion regarding lame-duck Mayor Godfrey's last-minute effort to convince the Council "to address his proposal to lower Ogden's water rates." Whereas Godfrey had earlier announced his intention to "employ a rarely used executive privilege to call the city council into a special session, forcing them to address his proposal to lower Ogden's water rates," it seems that he's now hustled the matter onto tonight's Regular Council Meeting calender instead:

7. New Business:
a. Revision to Water Utility Service Fees. Proposed Ordinance 2011-55 amending the Ogden Municipal Code by amending Subsection 9-1-6.A to revise water utility service fees; and by providing that this ordinance shall become effective September 1, 2011.
In essence, Godfrey's proposed adjusted rate structure would "charge all users the same rate for the first 10,000 gallons of water, the amount the average home needs for indoor household use. It then proposes a tiered structure that provides for those without secondary water to pay less than those with secondary water."

Although Godfrey's stated object in seeking these rate revisions is to "create parity between those with and without secondary water," we're scratching our head wondering why Boss Godfrey believes it's fair to gouge those property owners who had the foresight to purchase properties with secondary water, and thereby in effect force them to subsidise those property owners without that amenity. Perhaps one of our Gentle Readers can enlighten us about that. It makes no sense to us.

You can review the full details concerning the above two Council agenda items by clicking on the Ogden City Council packet link below:
We'll dedicate this thread to any readers who'd like to comment about any of the items appearing on tonight's Council agenda, and will of course cordially invite anyone who attends tonight's meeting to report back with their post-meeting remarks after tonight's Council Session adjourns.

That's it for now, WCF Readers.

The floor's open for your ever-enlightening comments.

Update 11/16/11 5:10 a.m.: The Standard partially reports on the results of last night's Council Meeting. To Boss Godfrey's "extreme disappointment," "[i]nstead of adopting Godfrey's [half-baked] proposal, the city council [wisely] approved a resolution to begin a comprehensive effort starting next month to establish new water rates":
The new rates are scheduled to be in place by May 1, 2012, in time for the annual watering season.

A WCF Hat Tip to City Council Grownup Chairwoman Caitlin K. Gochnour who said, "the council is committed to embarking on a thorough public process to ensure the new water rates are in the best interest of residents and the municipality."

Update 11/19/11 8:57 a.m.: The video recording of Tuesday's regular Council Session is now online. Discussion of proposed water rate ordinance revisions begin at 12:00 minutes; the Council's voice vote rejecting Godfrey's knee-jerk proposal and instead approving a new comprehensive water rate study starts at 34:45; Mayor Godfrey's comments (wherein he expresses his "extreme disappointment," can be found at 39:01:

Standard-Examineer Op-ed: Government Monopoly of Candidate Debates is Undemocratic

More great ideas from the Ogden Ethics Project

Just so we don't let the day slip by without at least something for our Weber County Forum readers to chew on, we're delighted to put the spotlight on the latest Dan Schroeder Op-ed piece, which has just been uploaded to the Standard-Examiner website. Noting the inherent and awkward ethical problems associated with the hosting and broadcasting of Ogden Municipal Election candidate "debates" on the Ogden City-owned Channel 17 Station, (affectionatly known locally as "the Godfrey Propaganda Channel"), Professor Schroeder, writing on behalf of the Ogden Ethics Project, urges the Ogden City Council (among other things) to "at least adopt an ordinance in advance to set out the rules for future candidate debates," and further to "take control over Channel 17 programming away from the mayor's office and put it in the hands of an independent volunteer board":
Sounds like a couple of danged great ideas to us.

So what say out Gentle Readers say about this?

2011 Ogden Municipal Election: The Aftermath - Updated

A WCF reader invitation to do a post-mortem on the "cleanest" and most uplifting Ogden City Municipal Election during the six years in which Weber County Forum has been covering Ogden election races

I can't tell you how well it went. I can't thank you for all you have done.

Mike Caldwell
Caldwell wins Ogden mayoral race
November 9, 2011

I’m excited to work with a new administration. From my experience working with Mike ... he’s a consensus builder, and that’s a refreshing change. Even if you have the greatest ideas, if you can’t articulate them to the public, it creates problems.

Amy Wicks
Wicks, Hyer secure spots on Ogden City Council
November 9, 2011

I’ve watched the administration and the council barter back and forth for years now, although bartering may not be the right word. Maybe it’s barking. But I think I can bring some unity to city government

Richard Hyer
Wicks, Hyer secure spots on Ogden City Council
November 9, 2011

As we reported last night, the final (unofficial) results are in; and Mike Caldwell, Richard Hyer, Caitlin Gochnour and Amy Wicks emerge as the clear winners from what turned out to be the "cleanest" and most uplifting Ogden City Municipal Election during the six years in which Weber County Forum has been covering Ogden election races. Both the Standard-Examiner and Salt Lake Tribune had reporters working into the wee hours, and we accordingly provide the following post-election stories "bright and early" this morning:
The floor's open, Weber County Forum readers. Who'll be the first to offer their own take on the true meaning of all this?

Update 11/9/11 9:52 a.m.: Thanks to a tip from another sharp-eyed and alert WCF reader, we're delighted to link this Jennifer Neil post-election concession statement and thank you note, which just popped up on the Standard-Examiner website:
Seems to us that there just has to be a place for a smart, talented and community-dedicated Ogden citizen like narrowly-defeated Ogden Council Ward 2 candidate Jennifer J Neil somewhere in Ogden City government. With all due respect for her vote-count prevailing 2011 Ogden Municipal Election opponent, Richard Hyer, it still seems to us that the voters of Ogden's City's Ward 2 seriously missed the boat, in failing to select her for the Ward 2 Council position. Ms. Neil does however mention her understanding that "there will (soon) be an opening (Mr. Hyer's PC seat) on the City Planning Commission ...." We'll consequently be keeping our fingers crossed that Ms. Neil will be submitting her planning commission (or some other similar position of responsibility) application forthwith... Go Jennifer, Go!

2011 Ogden City Municipal Election Day Thread - Updated 4X

Follow tonight's real-time vote tallies here at Weber County Forum

As every regular Weber County Forum reader is well aware, today is Ogden City Municipal Election Day. The polls open at 7:00 a.m., and will remain in business until 8:00 this evening at all Ogden City voter precinct polling places, as indicated by the Ogden IT Department's nifty new interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping software:
We're urging all WCF readers to make a special effort to show up to vote for the candidates whom we've endorsed, Jennifer Neil, Amy Wicks and Anyone but Brandon Stephenson. All prospective voters should also be aware that although supporters of the opposition crony capitalist Godfreyite-style Candidate Faction don't score high marks for political sophistication, they are reliable sheeple voters, and can be generally expected to show up in high numbers to vote as a flock bloc. So it's imperative that supporters of the Grownup Candidate Faction don't inadvertently drop the ball this go-round.

And don't forget, folks, Godfreite-style Faction mayoral candidate Stephenson, in particular, was "FOR" The Malans Basin & Mountain Gondola Development Project, long before he was "against it." Hopefully that memory will assist our readers in building up a sufficient head of steam to propel them to their polling places to vote for the best-qualified mayoral candidate, Anyone but Brandon Stephenson.

If you still need to "bone up" on the qualifications of today's candidates however, be sure to take a look at our right sidebar election module, and our General Election Candidate Roster in particular, where you'll find a true wealth of candidate information, including candidate profiles, web links, election stories, etc. Without a doubt, the material contained therein is the most robust collection of informative 2011 Ogden Municipal Election tidbits which can be found anywhere on the web, (even if we do say so ourselves).

The tallying of votes will begin shortly after 8:00 p.m. Taking into account the logistics of physically transporting polling data from individual polling places to the "counting room," and assembling and recording the results, our experience with earlier elections dictates that final vote counts are unlikely to be made public much earlier than 9:00 p.m. In that connection however, we're now linking Ogden City's online vote tallying software, to give our readers plenty of time to tune up their own computers, and make sure their own Adobe Flash Player utility software is fully updated. Here's the Ogden City online vote tally link. The real-time online utility is up and running right now, so if it isn't displaying on your computer, you obviously have some Flash Player tinkering to do:
As we await this evening's election results however, we'll invite anyone and everyone to chime in with a little election day conversation. Feedback about how your voting experience went today would be most welcome, not only for the benefit of your blogmeister, but also for the thousand or more other individual WCF readers whom we anticipate will be checking in to monitor election results today.

That' it for now, Gentle Readers.

Who'd like to go out on a limb and predict today's election outcome? Who'll be the first to just generally throw in their own 2¢? Who'd merely like to blow off a little pent up steam? Who'll breathe a welcome sigh of relief once the 2011 Municipal Election process is finally over, and Boss Godfrey "shuffles off to Buffalo"?

Have at it, O Gentle Ones.

Update 11/8/11 7:47 p.m.: We've gotten word that at least one of our readers is having trouble with the above-linked 2011 Municipal General Election Real-time Tallies feed. Here's a quick and dirty solution, in the event that a Flash Player update doesn't solve your problem. Simply click the link below, which will take you to Ogden Channel 17's online video broadcast, where vote tallies will be simulcast tonight:
Using this solution, the graphics quality will be inferior, and you won't have some of the "slick" technical advantages of the online Flash Player-based software, but at least you'll be able to follow the basic vote count in real-time as tonight's vote tallies roll in.

(And Comcast subscribers can simply tune into Channel 17 on their home TV sets, of course.)

Hoping this helps.

Update 11/8/11 9:16 p.m.: OK folks, the tote board is now starting to light up, with seven precincts reporting in.

Update 11/8/11 10:40 p.m.: Final (unofficial) tally from the Ogden City site, with 100% of 52 precincts reported:

Mayor
Caldwell 4281 (62%)
Stephenson 2656 (38%)
Conlin 2

Council Ward 2
Hyer 918 (56%)
Neil 722 (44%)

Council Ward 4
Gochnour 2741 (100%)

Council Seat "C"
Wicks 3345 (60%)
Thompson 1826 (33%)
Safsten 432 (8%)

That's it, folks. Looks like we'll move forward with a Council with a very similar makeup as we have now, and a new Mayor who's agenda still remains unknown.

Update 11/8/11 11:31 p.m.: Uh-0h. Looks like the final tallies have been adjusted once again on the Ogden City Site. Here's the latest:

Mayor
Caldwell 4281 (61%) W
Stephenson 2656 (38%)
Conlin 73

Council Ward 2
Hyer 918 (56%) W
Neil 722 (44%)

Council Ward 4
Gochnour 2741 (100%) W

Council Seat "C"
Wicks 3345 (49%) W
Thompson 1826 (27%)
Safsten 1645 (24%)

What's up with that? Did Comrade Safsten arrive in the "counting room" at the last minute, with a wheelbarrow full of uncounted ballots? We certainly wouldn't put it past him.

And here's the Election Summary Report from the Weber County website, which corresponds with these newly-amended Council At-large "C" numbers:
Go figure! Kinda shakes your confidence in Ogden City's IT Department, doesn't it?

All we can say at this juncture... we never had problems like this when we were still using paper ballots.

So what say our gentle readers about all this?

A WCF "Hard Sell," Prior to Tomorrows Ogden Municipal Election

OKAY, Folks! The 2011 Ogden Municipal Election will be in full swing starting at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, and as far as we're concerned, we're urging you all to show up en masse to vote for the true council candidate grownups in the most important races, namely smart and Ogden community-dedicated political newcomer Jennifer Neil and the proven fiscally-conservative and taxpayer-friendly Amy Wicks.

If however you wouldn't be offended by Ogden City''s still-preserved Ogden City benchlands being raped and bulldozed, Please Vote for the gang of "flaky" City Council/Mayoral Godfreyite candidates who have that agenda in their plans, including Richard Hyer, Comrade "Bulldoze Mt Ogden Park" Godfreyite 2005 throwback Richard "Dick" Safsten, (and Brandon "Sockpuppet" Stephenson, of course).

As for the Ogden Mayoral race specifically! Here's out take: Vote for anybody else other than Boss Godfrey's "Sockpuppet", i.e, Brandon Stephenson.
On the other hand, if you'd be offended by Ogden's still-naturally preserved Ogden City Mount Ogden Park and Ogden's upper benchlands and foothills still remaining un-raped and un-bulldozed, please be sure to vote for the gang of "flaky" council and mayoral-recycled Godfreyite candidates, including the city's three Godfreyite "Richards":

And don't forget, folks, Candidate Stephenson, in particular, was "FOR" The Malans Basin & Mountain Gondola Development Project, long before he was "against it."

The correct choices should more than obvious, No?

Big Fight at Last Tuesday's City Council Meeting -- Boss Godfrey Blows His Top

Councilman Stephenson, a candidate in tomorrow's 2011 Ogden mayoral election, once again demonstrates his absolute disregard for his fiduciary obligations as a sitting Ogden City Council member, and his continuing willingness to issue the Mayoral Administration another "blank check."

Following up on a tip from another sharp-eyed and alert Weber County Forum reader, we've just listened to (and watched) the full video of last Tuesday's Ogden City Council meeting.

Godfrey wanted a little over $1 million for undisclosed projects in the east central neighborhood, but he refused to reveal (at least in public--we get the sense that the council might have heard more in closed meetings) exactly what the projects are.

The Council majority gave him $550,000 for projects which had been specifically identified, but withheld the rest, and Boss Godfrey then went pretty much ballistic and accused the Council majority of being dishonest about their rationale.

Take a look at the video yourself, to follow the pertinent City Council discussion. The main appropriation item discussion begins at 1:15:25, and you can fast forward to 1:58:30 to watch the ever-petulant Boss Godfrey blow his top:

The vote was 5-2, with the encouragingly conscientious council majority voting to defer appropriating the entire one million dollars until the matter could be re-calendered for the public discussion of specific projects. Stephens and Stephenson voted, sheep-like, in favor of just trusting Boss Godfrey, of course.

Godfrey protege Councilman Brandon "Sockpuppet" Stephenson, a candidate in tomorrow's 2011 Ogden Mayoral Election, once again demonstrates his absolute disregard for his fiduciary obligations as a sitting Ogden City Council member, and his continuing willingness to issue the Mayoral Administration what would essentially amount to yet another "blank check."

If the beleaguered Emerald City Taxpayers are unfortunate enough to have Stephenson elected to fill Boss Godfrey's soon-to-be vacated mayoral seat, by the way, they can most certainly expect much more of the same.

Our Weber County Forum tipster helpfully provides this closing editorial comment, by the way: "It's pretty clear that he (Godfrey) intends to go out with a bang."

Update 11/7/11 7:15 a.m.: In our never ending quest for complete thoroughness, and for the benefit of any WCF readers who'd like to delve a little more deeply into the Godfrey Administration proposals precipitating Tuesday night's Mayor/Council kerfluffle, we accordingly link the full Council packet for last Tuesday's meeting:
Don't let the cat get your tongues! It's been a mite too quiet around here of late.

Stop the Presses: The Standard Endorses Mike Caldwell for Ogden Mayor

The Standard-Examiner goes 3 for 3 in great candidate 2011 Ogden City Municipal Election "picks" this afternoon, with yet another perspicacious candidate recommendation. Read all about it in the full SE Op-ed linked below, wherein our marvellous home town newspaper gives the boot-licking "Godfreyite" Brandon "Sockpuppet" Stephenson the old "Royal heave ho," whilst quite rightly endorsing the extremely popular Ogden City government newcomer mayoral office aspirant, Mike Caldwell:
Read up, folks!

"Anybody but Brandon," we'll cheerfully intone:

The Standard's right, wethinks. Ogden City government desperately needs a "fresh new face" up there in the ninth floor Ogden City mayoral "Godfrey-occupied wheelhouse":

To put an even more fine point upon it, we believe that all the last vestiges of Godfrey tyranny must be be eradicated from Ogden City government by someone like Mike Caldwell, before the beleguered lumpencitizens will ever experience any real "political healing," wethinks.

And whatever you do, O Gentle WCF Readers, don't forget to lodge your ever-savvy reader ruminations in our comments section (below):

Hot Off the Press: The Standard-Examiner Endorses Amy Wicks For Ogden Council At-large Seat "C"

Another fantastic Standard-Examiner 2011 Municipal Election pick

On the heels of yesterday's strong Standard-Examiner Council Ward 2 (Jennifer Neil) endorsement, we're now doubly delighted to report this afternoon that The SE Editorial Board has just now posted to its website its recommendation in the other contested 2011 Ogden City Council race. Check out the "hot off the press" editorial piece linked below, wherein the Standard-Examiner endorses veteran Ogden City Council incumbent Amy Wicks for Ogden Council At-large Seat "C":
This, folks, is a newspaper editorial board firing on all 16 cylinders and running on nitro!

Breaking: The Standard-Examiner Endorses Jennifer Neil In Ogden's Ward 2

The Standard definitely gets it right with this "savvy" pre-election pick

We'll say we're absolutely delighted to find this Standard-Examiner article on line just now, wherein the Standard-Examiner endorses the "'lovely" Jennifer Neil, possibly one of the best-qualified candidates ever to run for Ogden City's often moribund Ward 2 Council Seat. Here's the Standard's first endorsement for the 2011 Ogden City Municipal Election, wherein the Standard "makes no bones" about their Ward 2 candidate endorsement":
The Standard definitely gets it right with this pre-election pick.

Attention, Ward 2 voters: Once the vibrant and brilliant Ms. Neil is elected, the north end of town will no longer be treated like "Ogden's Red-headed Step-child."

"Bully" for the Standard, Jennifer Neil, Ward 2 residents, and Ogden City lumpencitizens in general, we say!

Patrick C. Conlin, a Viable Write-in Protest Candidate?

Put this under your hat when you decide to vote in the Ogden City mayoral race on November 8 - An alternative to the two Caldwell and Stephenson Corporo-fascist clones

LOL! Whilst in the process of updating our right sidebar "Election Module" individual candidate pages this morning, we stumbled upon something interesting via Google search, in re Write-in Mayoral hopeful Patrick C. Conlin's write-in candidacy. Mayoral candidate Conlin has set up a very robust Facebook campaign page, which is truly a heckuva lotta fun:
As an old dyed-in-the-wool Snowbasin Powderhound (goin back to the year 1953), your blogmeister couldn't be more in agreement with at least most of Mayoral race "outsider" Mr. Patrick C. Conlin's main platform points as set forth in this truly great campaign graphic (which is also now embedded in out WCF right sidebar):

Put this under your hat when you decide to vote in the Ogden City mayoral race on November 8.

Gotta say we love Mr. Conlin's campaign slogans:
  • Power to the people
  • Powder to the People
  • Free Internet & Transporatation to and from airports, trains, hotels & resorts.
Now there's a Snow Basin-loving man of the people with whom we can whole-heartedly agree!

Gotta say we LOVE this guy!

Just another Write-in alternative, we suppose, for those voters who can't stomach either of the two 2011 Mayoral election Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum "Mayoral frontrunners."

The third set of 2011 Ogden Municipal Election financial disclosure statements is now posted on the city's web site:
Caldwell has raised an additional $13,410, bringing his total 2011 campaign war chest to the obscene sum of $78,166.57.

Stephenson has added another $5,483, which probably indicates that special interest donors haven't yet completely thrown his candidacy overboard. As of the 11/1/11 filing date, Brandon's now sponged up a total of $26,823, which explains all those giant lawn signs, we guess.

Ward 2 Council Candidate Richard Hyer has hauled in an additional 2500 bucks, with a $1,500 donation from the Wasatch Association of Realtors, and $1,000 from long-time Boss Godfrey crony, Wadman Construction.

It's been a real special interest bonanza of a fundraising month for late-coming At Large "C" write-in "candidate" Richard "Bulldoze the Bench" Safsten too, with another $6,700 added to his war chest, which now comes to a grand total of $9,700.

Do you suspect that special interest donors believe they can buy this election? You bet they do. Well be finding out very soon whether the "Biggest Money Talks the Most Loudly."

For convenient pre-election WCF reader research, we've also uploaded and added these latest financial disclosure documents from all the still-active 2011 candidates to each individual Candidate Information Page within our right sidebar election module General Election Candidate Roster.

The world-wide blogosphere sits on the edge of its seat, awaiting your always astute utterances, regarding these most recent 2011 Ogden Municipal Election financial disclosure reports.

Standard-Examiner: Another City Council Candidate Showcase Event

Weirdly enough, the ladies from the WCWLC have evidently ignored the candidates from the contested Ogden City Council Ward 2 race

As a followup to their earlier October 12 Ogden Mayoral candidate Question and Answer Session, The Weber County Women's Legislative Council will be holding its second 2011 Ogden City Election candidate event on Wednesday night (11/2/11), this time a city council candidate Meet the Candidates Night, the strange details of which we'll incorporate from this brief Standard-Examiner announcement:
OGDEN -- The Women's Legislative Council of Weber County will hold a Meet the Candidates Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the South Ogden Senior Center, 580 39th St.

Candidates for the city council will introduce themselves and address concerns and questions from the audience. Expected to attend are candidates for At large Seat C Rick Safsten, Steve Thompson and Amy Wicks, and South Ogden City Council candidates Michael Jacobazzi, Sallee Orr and Kelly Zaugg.

The public is invited to attend. For more information, call 801-621-4788 or 801- 644-1585.
That's right, folks. It'll be a genuine mixed bag, featuring council hopefuls from the South Ogden city council race, together with Ogden primary-qualifying At-large Seat "C" candidates Amy Wicks and Stephen D. Thompson , right along with the late-filing write-in Comrade Rick Safsten, whose name won't even appear on the November 8 ballots. Weirdly enough, the ladies from the WCWLC have evidently ignored however, for reasons unknown, two other ballot-qualified candidates from the other contested Ogden City Council race, namely Ogden Ward 2 Council candidates Jennifer Neil and Richard Hyer, each of whom was legitimately selected by the voters during the September 13 Primary to stand for the November 8 Ogden General Election, (unlike the conniving interloper, Mr. Safsten).

While we won't speculate on these ladies' reasoning for this glaring inconsistency, we will urge all Ogden City political wonks who support the re-election of incumbent Councilwoman Amy Wicks to make arrangements to be in attendance, if only to demonstrate solidarity with, and support for, Ms. Wicks and her candidacy.

That's it for now, gentle readers.

Here's another golden opportunity to throw in your own 2¢.

Who would like to offer their own speculation regarding the WCWLC's apparently willful decision to exclude Ogden's Ward 2 candidates? Why would the WCWLC set up a phony forum like this, without inviting ALL the candidates? Nefarious motives? Mere poor planning? Something in-between? And what other issues can you spot regarding this upcoming 2011 Municipal Election event?

This will be "on the test," btw.

Ogden City 2011 General Election Voting Guide

Special Guest Gloating from Chester Hop-a-long

Hi folks! It’s your friend Chester Hop-a-long here, and I’ve never felt BETTER! As the president of your crony ruling class in the government business partnership (GBP), I can tell you we have worked for years to have a mayoral election where we had all the bases covered, and we finally GOT it. No matter who you vote for in the coming election, WE will OWN the next mayor. So just let me take a minute to reach my svelte arm over to grab another handful of Monkeybusinesss® brand monkey chow, and I’ll get right into the GLOATING. Hehehehehe.

There’s no point in me writing about whom you should vote for, for mayor, since it really doesn’t matter. Instead, let me tell you what you have to LOOK FORWARD TO.

For years, we’ve wanted to re-brand Ogden, by changing the outdated name of the city together with the sappy logos that you see on the water bills. After the election, we’ll finally have the power to do that. How do you like the new name and logo for our city? We feel “Cronytown, UT” conveys an upbeat tone, while the logo has a playful retro quality. And we’ve also produced 40,000 new bumper stickers that you will be placing on your cars after the election, celebrating the new mayor. We are at the zenith of our power, all under my leadership. Even the naysayers have our guy’s campaign signs in their yards. Hehehehehe!

Next, you’re probably wondering what will happen to the east bench over the next few years. Well what do you think will happen, geniuses? Hey, we condemned the whole river district – single family houses with large, tree-covered lots – so we could turn it into Ogden’s most high-density (and therefore most profitable) insta-slum! Have you seen the plans? Click here! Then, read it carefully! After you take away 57,000 square feet (a little over an acre) for “open space” in the form of parking lots and pathways, there are 200 residences plus a half acre of retail, all on five acres! That’s 40 residences per acre not counting the strip malls! Hey, don’t try to breathe! And just think of all the VACANT high density residence/retail in Ogden now! But don’t worry. A bad idea is always good for another try! Especially when my cronies are the ones getting paid to build all of it!

Well our plans for the EAST BENCH have been “in the drawer” for years waiting for the right mayor. Here is one of our computer generated models.

We call it “high density hellhole” development or “HDH”. And it’s ALL PROFIT … pure and sweet! And if you think the mayor’s appointed go-alongs on the planning commission, or the planning department, or city codes will save you from HDH , let me explain something to you. That dense, twisted thicket of bureaucracy the city lays down is not intended to protect YOU from trashy property! If it was, then how come there’s so much trashy property, huh Sherlock? No, it’s intended to protect US, the crony elite, from COMPETITION. You see, we have the manpower and connections to wade through the city’s bureucratic BS, but most small companies don’t! Less competition = more profit for US! You could have figured that out for yourself, couldn’t you, Einstein? Red tape? We love red tape!

But now that I’m through making you weep, weep dearly, for your future, what say we move on to my mayoral candidates?

Mike “No Streetcar” Caldwell

We’ve fronted Caldwell so much cash, he’s a shoo-in for mayor. In fact, he’s so sure he’s going to win that if you’ve seen any of the debates, you know he’s been dodging every question that comes his way. He’s harder to pin down than a housefly on heroin. But people have uncovered a couple of things: He’s against the Street Car, and he’s for the field house if it can be packaged right for the voters to swallow.

Now you might wonder why “No Streetcar” Caldwell is such a big fan of Mayor Godfrey, and like Godfrey, he’s against the fixed-rail streetcar. You could ask why the city has money to build that new airport terminal, complete with a row of executive hangars and two restaurants, all of which are VACANT. You might be curious why the city can afford the Salomon Center that LOSES a pile of case each year. And then you might wonder why the city has money to build the Junction Building that has been vacant from day-one except for Wells Fargo that just moved across the street (leaving another building vacant). You could question why the cronies think the field house is a good idea even thought Godfrey’s own rigged numbers showed it will cost tens of millions and lose millions of dollars a year. AND YET, in spite all of this government spending, the cronies are strangely AGAINST the Streetcar, even thought the feds will pick up 75% of the tab. Why????

Well if you’d come out of your coma for a just a minute, you might notice that all of Godfrey-Caldwell’s commercial contractor campaign contributors build all kinds of buildings, (and we even put up gondola posts), but one thing we DON’T build is RAILROADS!! So why would we want the city (we call it the “piggy bank”) to spend what little money it has left on a fixed-rail Streetcar system that will do us cronies no good, when we can think up plenty of other BUILDINGS that the city can pay us to build?! Building a Streetcar system doesn’t make US any money, honey! So now, it finally makes sense to you, huh? Well welcome to the party! Glad you could finally show up!

Brandon “Star Power” Stephenson

Starpower Stephenson thought HE was our candidate. But we’ve pretty much left him to twist in the wind. His slogan is, “Moving forward, together”, and you can see it on his larger campaign signs. Well here’s a news flash: Moving forward together is fine, but it kinda matters WHERE you’re moving TO, doesn’t it? But hey voters, go ahead. Move forward together with Caldwell or Stephenson – I don’t care which!

And as I mentioned before, Brandon looks a lot like Famous George, the loser from the TV show Seinfeld. Well, Brandon is behind in the polls by about 5 to 1. He’s looking to re-charge his campaign by emphasizing the resemblance. He’s come up with the eye-catching poster below. Hey whatever, Brandon. But for the 8 years Brandon has been on the city council, he’s done what Godfrey told him to do. And Godfrey did what we told him to do. Star Power Stephenson may look like a famous loser, but he’s OUR loser. We got NO PROBLEM with this guy. (He’s also against the Streetcar, if anybody cares.)

But hey, there’s nothing to worry about, huh naysayers? You’re finally getting RID of GODFREY, right? Hahahahahaha!

City Council

As far as city council, you got these choices:

Reliable cronies to loot you for my greater good: Planning Commission toady Richard “PC” Hyer, and write in candidate Rick “Bulldoze the Trails” Saftsen

No chance to win: Stephen Thompson

Independent minded candidates, whom I hate, who will probably win: Amy Wicks and Jennifer Neil. (These people think about issues instead of doing as I tell them to. And they are the only people who will stand up for you against me and my mayoral cronies! So don’t vote for them!)

But I’m not worried. I’m gonna own the MAYOR either way!

And come to think of it, given my manipulative successes, what is this food I’m eating? It’s time for me to upgrade to Junglegold® brand monkey chow, and to get my cage set up with a carpeted floor instead of this lousy paper! And I want flowers around me in my cage from now on instead of these crummy leaves! And now, I give the following code words to my cronies, your community leaders in the GBP: Eeee Eeeee Eeeee! Oooo Ooooo Ooooo! Ah – Ah - Ah! All our toadies: Arise! Your ruling oligarchs have spoken! The great day of our power is almost here! And to the rest of you, I can only say: Hehehehehehe!

Standard-Examiner: Caldwell, Stephenson Both Promise to Boost Ogden's Future

Both candidates bravely vow: "We will not (repeat NOT) "reinvent the wheel'"

The Standard-Examiner devotes a generous volume of ink in its latest contribution to the discussion in re the 2011 Ogden Municipal Election Mayoral Race, with this morning's relatively protracted (5919 words) front page story, profiling the heretofore virtually indistinguishable candidates Mike "Tweedle dum" Caldwell and Brandon "Tweedle Dee" Stephenson, and further focusing on their respective experience, platforms and goals. Here's the lede:
OGDEN -- Mayoral candidates Brandon Stephenson and Mike Caldwell are both confident their government, professional and leadership experiences will enable them to lead Ogden along a trajectory as a city on the rise.

Stephenson, 42, concluding his second term on the city council, and Caldwell, 40, Weber County's public information officer and manager of the Weber County Ice Sheet, face each other in the Nov. 8 general election.
Read the full Scott Schwebke story here:
What's apparent is that at least at this late point in the game, the candidates are now trying to differentiate themselves one from the other, (slightly at least), with Caldwell's emphasis on "tourism" and "neighborhood safety," and Stephenson's continuing focus on Big-government-propelled "economic development."

Nevertheless, their platforms are still so similar that each of them promises not to "reinvent the wheel," (whatever obscure meaning that trite cliche is supposed to convey).

So what about it? Do any of our readers see even "a dime's worth of difference" between these two candidates, in view of this morning's SE story?

Have at it, O Gentle Readers.

And stay tuned, folks, a little birdy tells us that boffo WCF contributor Chester Hop-a-long will be offering a few more choice words on the subject of the 2011 Ogden City Mayoral Race here at Weber County Forum early this afternoon, for your political mirth, merriment and enlightenment.

Standard Examiner: Two Rookie Candidates Seek Ogden's Ward 2 Seat

Hyer comes off as just another run-of-the mill Godfreyite type, whereas candidate Jennifer Neil will obviously bring a much needed higher level of intelligence, analytical talent and personal initiative to the Council, wethinks

This morning's Standard-Examiner focuses on the 2011 Ogden City Election again this morning, with this Top of Utah Section story briefly profiling Council Ward 2 candidates Jennifer Neil and Richard Hyer:
"Both candidates in the race for the Ogden City Council Ward 2 seat would be rookies on the council, but one appears to favor the status quo more than the other," Tim Gurrister reports.

Indeed Hyer comes off as just another run-of-the mill Godfreyite-style clone, mouthing the same worn-out, crony capitalist, Big Government market interventionist platitudes that we've heard mindlessly spouted from the current Ward 2 incumbent for eight years, whereas candidate Jennifer Neil demonstrates that she will plainly bring a much needed higher level of intelligence, analytical talent and personal initiative to the Council, wethinks.

You'll also notice a Jennifer Neil lawn sign facsimile proudly planted in our right sidebar by the way, which you can consider to be WCF's highly-enthusiastic and prominent 2011 Ward 2 candidate endorsement.

When you vote for your Ogden City Council representatives on November 8, O Gentle Ward 2 voters, be sure to vote for the "smarter of the two" candidates.

Ironically, voting for the "brainier" candidate is a real "no brainer," No?

So what's your own take on the Ward 2 race, folks?

Update 10/29/11 3:52 p.m.: One of our gentle readers wrote in to complain a few minutes ago that Mr. Gurrister's above article "hopelessly understates" Ms. Neil's platform broad platform positions, and sent us scanned copies of Ms. Neil's essential platform, as stated in a mailer that arrived in his mailbox today. We agree, and we'll therefore embed the front and back sides of the "mailer" that he just now received, scanned, and sent us just a few minutes back:

Yep! This is much more accurate and complete, wethinks.
