Republican politicians marvel at how [Trump] has “tapped into” a hitherto unknown swath of the voting public. But what he has tapped into is what the founders most feared when they established the democratic republic: the popular passions unleashed, the “mobocracy.” Conservatives have been warning for decades about government suffocating liberty. But here is the other threat to liberty that Alexis de Tocqueville and the ancient philosophers warned about: that the people in a democracy, excited, angry and unconstrained, might run roughshod over even the institutions created to preserve their freedoms. As Alexander Hamilton watched the French Revolution unfold, he feared in America what he saw play out in France — that the unleashing of popular passions would lead not to greater democracy but to the arrival of a tyrant, riding to power on the shoulders of the people.Read the whole dang deal!

The editorial page of the Dallas Morning News is declining to back the Republican presidential nominee for the first time since 1964.Read up, Peeps!
In a scathing editorial, the paper wrote that Donald Trump is "at odds with nearly every GOP ideal this newspaper holds dear. "
"We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory," the paper wrote. "Trump doesn't reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn't reflect the GOP of the future. Donald Trump is not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote."
The missive comes as a new poll from the Washington Post shows a dead heat among voters in Texas, a traditionally red state.

Salt Lake Tribune: Case Against Former Utah A.G. Mark Shurtleff Is Off; Swallow Prosecution Still On
Corruption case » Judge drops charges against ex-Utah A.G.; taxpayers off the hook for legal bills

As a followup to our coverage of the long-extended Mark Shurtleff public corruption matter, it's with considerable disappointment that we report the latest news.
Here's this morning's Salt Lake Tribune lede, Peeps:
A state judge dismissed criminal public corruption charges against Mark Shurtleff on Wednesday, ending the former Utah attorney general's two-year legal tussle.Read the full story here, Gentle Readers:
Third District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills signed the order, citing a state motion seeking the dismissal from the chief prosecutor, Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings.
The dismissal was granted without prejudice, meaning the case could be filed again, although that seems unlikely.
"#Hallelujah! #Justice! #gratitude," Shurtleff, a three-term attorney general, exclaimed on Twitter.
Trib reader Caveat Emptor 100 nails it, wethink:
We, voters, may never find out enough information to validate the Davis County Prosecutor's decision. Certainly, the Supreme Court's decision in tossing VA Governor Mc Donald's prosecution is an important factor [citation added] ......Looking at the bright side, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill assures us he remains prepared to to prosecute Shurtleff's successor, Attorney General John Swallow,on the separate charges which also remain pending; and Troy Rawlings is keeping his fingers crossed that Shurtleff's lawyers are blocked from collecting hefty court costs and attorney fees as a result of Shurtleff's fortuitous case dismissal.
Remember, being a scumbag , accepting bribes, is legally acceptable, as long as no one can prove that you returned the "favor" with official action......

Standard-Examiner Letter: Weber County GOP Leaders Should Resign Over Harvey Campaign Funding
We'll enthusiastically join with Mayor Taylor's reasonable demand for Mr. Knighton'a and Ms. Pipkin's heads on a platter
In the interest of sparking some political discussion after something of a lull, as we stand poised on the brink of Tuesday's Utah Primary election, we're delighted to put the spotlight on this morning's boffo Standard-Exaxminer letter to the letter, submitted by none other than North Ogden City Mayor Brent Taylor, concerning Weber County GOP party shenanigans in the pending Weber County Commission primary race. The original material's short and compact, so we'll simply incorporate the text in full:
We'll enthusiastically join with Mayor Taylor's reasonable demand for Mr. Knighton'a and Ms. Pipkin's heads on a platter.
So what say out Gentle Readers about all this, folks?
![]() |

It is outrageous that Weber County Republican Party leaders donated party funds to make the biggest contribution by far of the entire Weber County Commission campaign to one of the two candidates in a contested Republican primary election.
Out of fairness to all candidates, the state Republican Party bylaws strictly require neutrality of state party leaders in Republican vs. Republican primaries, and this principle should carry down to the county level. Instead, we have seen county party leaders and elites trying desperately to manipulate the election with mudslinging, rumor mills, and now by giving a massive amount of party funds to one candidate.
Thousands of the Republican Party dollars given to commission candidate Jim Harvey were donated by people like me who are supporting a different Republican candidate — which is exactly why it is so inappropriate to use party funds in a primary election.
In his famous 1796 farewell address, President George Washington spent nine paragraphs warning America against the "baneful effects of the spirit of party,” warning that “They serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community.” Party has never been more important than people, and Washington’s words ring true today as we see party leaders who, instead of acting as neutral party officials, have manipulated the process and injected a veritable tsunami of party money to try and sway the outcome and to protect their preferred candidate and — more importantly — to protect their precious party power.
I call on Chairman Noall Knighton and Vice-Chairwoman Lynda Pipkin of the Weber County GOP and anyone else associated with this outrageous use of party funds in a contested Republican primary election to step down, and for Weber County Republican voters to look through the party-funded smokescreen at the real issues this election should be about.
Brent Taylor

We'll enthusiastically join with Mayor Taylor's reasonable demand for Mr. Knighton'a and Ms. Pipkin's heads on a platter.

On His Deathbed, Former Republican Senator Apologizes For Donald Trump (Video)
As for the current situation in Utah's federal Senate delegation, and in hindsight, Your blogmeister would take Bob Bennett any day of the week, dead or alive, over his crackpot tea party replacement, Mike Lee.
Here's the video story, peeps:
Perhaps the Standard's Don Porter got it at least halfway right, after all, in the end:
"Unlike many of the politicians populating government today, Bennett was a statesman. In my book, that’s high praise," eulogizes the ever curmudgeonly Standard-Examiner legend, Don Porter.

Standard-Examiner: The Weber County Commission Debate Matters
Via the Standard Examiner:
To provide a forum for candidates to inform Weber County residents about where they stand on the issues, the Olene S. Walker Institute of Politics & Public Service at Weber State University is partnering with the Weber County League of Women Voters and the Standard-Examiner to hold a debate between the two Republican candidates for Weber County Commissioner, Caitlin Gochnour and Jim Harvey. Greg Halling, Standard-Examiner executive editor, will moderate the exchange. Here's the full SE story, folks:
The public is invited to the free event at 6:30 p.m. May 26 in Hurst Center Dumke Legacy Hall on WSU’s Ogden campus. If you have questions, contact Carla Price cprice@weber.edu/801-626-6252.
Dang rights "this debate matters," people. The essential question is whether the corrupt GOP convention system will shove another "good old boy" down the Weber County lumpencitizens' throats, or alternatively, whether the smart, and politically dedicated Caitlin Gochnour, with eight years' proven experience on the Ogden City Council, will succeed in overturning the current County Commission logjam against an unproven political newcomer..

The Independent:The Electoral Politics of the 2016 Western Freedom Festival
Vote Caitlin Gochnour for the Weber County Commission, Weber County Forum readers. Time to clean house on the free-spending Weber County Commission "good ole boy's men's club," wethinks.
Disturbing news from The Independent (a voice for Utah) of all places. No we'd never heard of them it until today either. But nevermind. Check out this morning's disturbing lede:
That's right, gentle readers. According to this report, "[T]he Posse (including the Weber County Commission) annually spends over $100,000 in public funds supporting both the Western Freedom Festival and the evil American Lands Council that is associated with the event. It’s money down the toilet on political, marginally religious pet projects of no intrinsic value and with nothing to show for the expense."
And there's's more to ponder "There is an election season underway wherein candidates for office may not agree with incumbents who believe they can misuse taxpayer monies and property to support pet causes and private concerts. As a taxpaying voter, neither should you."

Time to get your free VIP tickets for the taxpayer-funded 2016 Western Freedom Festival, this year held 9/11 weekend in Richfield, Utah. You just need to ask your county commissioners who childishly call themselves “The Posse.” I mean, who are they after to string up from a tree, taxpayers and student protesters?Read the full article here, Peeps.
The Posse consists of County Commissioners from Beaver, Garfield, Kane, Iron, Piute, San Juan, Wayne, Weber, Washington, and Sevier Counties.

Salt Lake Tribune: Judge Upholds Signature-gathering System Despite Utah Republicans’ Protests
Via the Salt Lake Tribune:
A federal judge has upheld a new political nominating system that allows Utah Republican candidates to bypass the party's caucus and convention system in favor of gathering voter signatures instead — dealing a defeat to the state GOP.
U.S. District Judge David Nuffer's ruling Friday evening comes a week before the Utah Republican Party is set to choose candidates for Congress, governor and other offices at its convention.
Nuffer said the change "doesn't interfere with the state GOP's constitutional rights and is a legitimate action by the state to manage elections."

Here's the lede, peeps:
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Supreme Court justices poked at the Utah Republican Party's interpretation of a controversial new state election law in a hearing Monday as hundreds of candidates work to get on the primary ballot.Read up, WCF political wonks:
Though lawyers for the GOP, Utah Democratic Party or the state didn't want to read the tea leaves afterward, questions from Justices Deno Himonas and Christine Durham might signal where the court is headed.
Republican Party attorney Marcus Mumford argued that the state can't tell political parties how to select their nominees for public office.
"This statute doesn't do that," Durham said.
Who wants to bet that the entrenched Utah political parties will NOT get creamed in 2016, despite the Utah Supreme Court's obvious wisdom?

Why Food Stamps and Free Tuition Don’t Have Anything to Do with "Satan’s Plan"
Don't be dumbasses, my fellow Mormans!!!
Now that the 2016 Utah political campaigns are in full swing, Utah Mormons are having their quadrennial debate about whether or not social programs like Pell Grants, food stamps, and subsidized housing are tools of the devil. According to one common 21st Century Mormon philosophy (which has been kind of dominant on my Facebook feed recently), this kind of income redistribution FORCES us to give to the poor, thus TAKING AWAY OUR AGENCY and denying us the blessings that would come if we CHOSE to give to the poor like God wants us to. You can use persuasion to convince people to be charitable, but don’t use compulsion, BECAUSE THAT’S SATAN’S PLAN!!!!!
Read up on at least one of the solid counter-arguments, my Mormon Crackpot Jackesses Friends:

The Utah House quashed a move Wednesday that would have erased a 2-year-old compromise about how political parties pick their nominees.
By a 42-30 margin, representatives defeated an amendment that would have allowed parties to select their nominees by any method they choose. The Utah Republican Party has been suing to seek that power and overturn SB54, passed two years ago.

The Folly of ‘Taking Back’ Federal Lands
Awesome article via AdventureJournal.Com ...
Read the "money quote," my fellow Utahns!
Anyone who wonders what Western states would do with U.S. land should consider what they’ve already done with it. In exchange for relinquishing all claims on public property, new states were awarded “trust lands.” Trust lands have generally been used to create revenue via oil and gas extraction, logging, mining, and outright sale.
For example, of Nevada’s original 2.7 million acres of trust land only 3,000 acres remain. In Colorado you can fish and camp on virtually all federal land and hunt on most. But you can’t hunt, fish or camp on most state land because it’s reserved for extractive industry.
