Hiya folks! Between tinkering around in the yard and on the computer this afternoon, we've decided to post an update on last Wednesday's most excellent Ogden Ethics Project (OEP)-sponsored Mayoral Candidate Forum event. Here's the latest. The Standard-Examiner now has a series of event-topical videos up on their website, which we've packaged and linked in a form which ought to be convenient to our WCF readership. There's no reason to hunt around folks. Check out these videos right here:
- Mayoral candidates talk about their qualifications and agendas
- Mayoral candidates discuss the role and organization of city government
- Mayoral candidates views on development in Ogden
- Mayoral candidates talk about economics and infrastructure
And whatever you do... don't let the cat get yer tongues...

Slick Steve Van Wagoner, never one to let the truth get in the way of a good story, is always fun to watch as he battles with reality- Susie quoting Jerry Brown and the failed state of California as a place to get ideas from is a bit comical- over all it was a fair event with good questions- and some good answers.
This is not about the candidate forum [kudos to the SE for making available what the taxpayer-funded Godfrey Channel refused to], but it is campaign related.
Moments ago, found a doorknob hanger on my front door from the Stephenson campaign. Here is how it opens, this text appearing just under Councilman Stephenson's picture:
"Brandon is the clear leader among candidates and is my choice to become Ogden's next mayor. --- Gage Froerer, Utah House of Representatives."
That's right. Rep. Gage "Asleep at the Switch" Froerer who voted for the Developers Dream Bill that created the Powderville mess that took the right of representation away from his own constituents in order to fatten the wallets of the Powderville developers thinks Councilman Stephenson has just the kind of sound judgment and good sense that Rep. Froerer appreciates and that he thinks Ogden needs.
So, Councilman Stephenson has turned to Rep. Froerer to endorse his business sense and good judgment.
OK. Duly noted.
Treetopper,
Note that Jerry Brown is the INCOMING governor. His point about getting
rid of RDAs and tax increment in California is relevant because after
years of these things California is a financial wreck - they don't
work. VanHooser's point was a good one.

Everyone should watch the third video for this truly historic quote from Stephenson:
"As far as the Malan's Basin resort, I don't think it was ever a real project anyway. There was never a developer that was really going to do it I don't think."
And so it ends like this. After all the hoopla, promises, questions, newspaper ads, brochures, rallies, yard signs, name calling, and animosity, one of the leading cheerleaders for the Malan's Basin resort (see http://www.ogdenmunicipalward2.com/Current_Projects/MalanBasinProject.html) now admits that it was "never a real project anyway." A truly historic statement.
Good catch, OIV!
Maybe Le Wagoner can put some of those good stories to use after the primaries and try to move the same 3 property listings he has on PPC's website for the past several months.
That was one of my favorite moments from the forum last Wed. That and the fact that not one of the mayoral candidates said s/he was in favor of the gondola, or the building of condos around Mt Ogden golf course.
It looks like Stepehenson has learned from Godfrey the art of changing one's tune when it's expedient.
Stephenson is just putty in anyone's hands -- that why they like him and want him as mayor -- they can get anything from the city that they want.
Yup, Councilman Stephenson is backing water fast on this one. But I was glad to see at the candidate forum the Godfrey Channel refused to air that not a single candidate of the 8 said they favored going ahead with either the gondola project or with selling Mt. Ogden Park lands for condo development. Nary a single one. Seems they've learned what Hizzonah learned in his last race: the "sell the park/build a gondola" issue was a toxic one for anyone seeking election in Ogden. That's why, mid-campaign, he bailed on his own proposal in a very public way.
I wouldn't mind Councilman Stephenson's change of heart on the issue -- I'm often encouraged when politicians say they learned something and so have changed their views. What's surprising is his reason: that he's realized that the plan was never a viable one, never real because there was no developer that was actually going to build a ski resort in Malan's Basin anyway. Couldn't help wondering when I heard that "Ah, Councilman, shouldn't you have been looking into the viability of the project some years ago before you decided to strongly support the Mayor's campaign to sell the park and build a flatland gondola to service a resort in Malan's Basin you now think was never going to be built anyway?"
Research first, conclusions second is, in general, a wise policy for sitting Council members I'd think.
B----are you saying Mr.Mom Van Wagoners listings are not moving? Perhaps he can start selling Arbon, Avon and Tupperware too.
There was no FNURE or Envision Ogden either! Those were also figments of someone's imagination. Great work catching the flip floppers!
Not to change the subject..but whats with all the dirt flying down at the River Parkway....lots of new dirt being brought in....is that thing even been approved?
Godfrey lost millions of back room dollars when the gondola/Malans project fell through.
I am guessing he still owes his puppet masters BIG on that back-room boondoggle.
Is anything left? It does seem that Godfrey has given away anything of value in Ogden. Then again that could be a reason Stephenson is so against the ethics proposal.
HILARIOUS!
Whoa. And check out what I just found SE Online. A Stephenson endorsement letter from Leg. 9 House Rep. (and Utah Realtor) Jeremy Peterson:
Stephenson is a consensus builder
Sockpuppet Stephenson... Friend of the greed-head real estate industry.
Stephenson's base of right wing socialist support seems to be shaping up just as we predicted it would.
