Salt Lake Tribune: Utah House Passes Bill to Allow Schools to Skip Sex Ed

With the 2012 General Election coming up fast, we hope all WCF readers will write this all down so they don't forget it

"We’ve been culturally watered down to think we have to teach about sex, about having sex and how to get away with it, which is intellectually dishonest." "Why don’t we just be honest with them upfront that sex outside marriage is devastating?"

Rep. Bill Wright, R-Holden

"You cannot speak of abstinence without talking to students about methods of birth control that are not certain, about protecting oneself from [sexually transmitted diseases] and all the things that can happen in a negative sense to a young person who engages in sex." "It’s really immoral not to teach kids about what the consequences are."

Rep. Carol Spackman Moss, D-Holladay

Eye opening story this morning from the Salt Lake Tribune, reporting that "A bill to allow Utah schools to drop sex education classes — and prohibit instruction in the use of contraception in those that keep the courses — moved significantly closer to becoming law Wednesday. The House passed HB363 by a 45-28 vote after a late-afternoon debate that centered largely on lawmakers’ differing definitions of morality":
Curious about how your Weber County Utah House Representatives delegation voted on this bill? Get the raw lowdown here:
Breaking out the votes by individual House members, we find that Representatives Brad Dee, Brad Galvez, Jeremy Peterson, Dixon Pitcher and Ryan Wilcox fall into the camp of those whose views of morality seem to center on the philosophy that ignorance is bliss, and that it's just fine for students in Utah public schools to run the risk of unwanted teen pregnancies and STDs, without the benefits of any formal instruction whatsoever regarding such matters.

A Weber County Forum Tip O' the Hat to Utah House grownups Gage Froerer and Richard Greenwood on the other hand, who plainly recognize that the real immorality is failing "to teach kids about what [the facts and] consequences are."

With the 2012 General Election coming up fast, we hope all WCF readers will write this all down so they don't forget it.

Don't let the cat get your tongues...

Thanks! It's refreshing to learn that there are at least two Weber County legislators who have the guts to refuse pander the the Kristian right.

 According to the official
Utah Legislative website tally
, Gage voted "yea."

Maybe I'll give him a ring to clear this all up.

Gage is one of my favorite legislators, all-in-all; and I certainly don't want to give him a bad rap.

So true. From the same clear thinking that decided not showing alcoholic drinks being prepared spare childrenfrom thinking about drinking not discussing sex education will keep children from thinking about sex.

Remarkable, innit, BR, that we're having this "Victorian Era" discussion, twelve years into the 21st century?

Take a deep bow, Rudy!

Seems like Gage  Froerer  may have re-evaluted his vote, thanks to you.

C'mon, guys, be practical. Do you have any idea how much it would cost to build hot tubs in every school so Utah Republican sex education could be conducted in the legislatively-approved [standing ovation] manner?  It'd be a budget buster fer sure.

Well, when damn near the entire GOP candidate list seems to think they're running for National Pastor instead of American President, it's not so surprising.

Does that mean the original listing of Gage Froeres's vote was in error or is it allowed(after the vote has been recorded) to change your vote if it does not change the final outcome?

Bob refers to the fact that Utah political bigwig Kevin Garn used his private hot tub to teach a young girl the facts of life, then paid her hush money, then when it all came out he resigned from the Utah Sleaze-islature and received a standing ovation from his fellow scum.

His comment is brilliant, if you get it.

 Exactly right, Oggie.

Poor Ol' GOP House Rep Kevin Garn Finds Himself In The Political Hotseat

No doubt about it.  Regular long-time WCF readers are in on "the joke."

Neither, BR.  I talked to Gage this morning, and he informed me that there were actually two votes: one for an amendment, and one for an up/down vote on the amended bill.

Unfortunately the Utah Leg website had the wrong vote tally link up when I published my original WCF article, a "housekeeping problem" which they corrected later.

Hoping this clears it all up.

Good one, Rudi!  If your family teenager  gets AIDS or turns up pregnant, you'll be able to attribute it the the Utah GOP morons, i.e. ,  Brad Dee, Brad Galvez, Jeremy Peterson, Dixon Pitcher and Ryan Wilcox.

Stick head in sand and it goes away!  As idiotic as this legislation is, there is no way I will soley rely on the gubberment to be the sole source of sex education to my kids....the hipocracy of things that go on in this state from teenage pregnancy, divorce rate, underage drinking, medications and alcohol is nausiating if not humorous...
