The real reason there will be no outright ethics ban on legislative gifts

By Ozboy

I would like to point out an incredible editorial in today's Tribune by the new speaker of the house Dave Clark.

It is packed with lies about how the legislature is finally going to go after the putrid and ever present ethics problem in Utah's state government.

It is so full of crap that it ends up being very funny. If you read it be sure and catch the very, but unintended, funny piece of comic genius at the end, where the clueless and Nancy Workman Award winning speaker tells us that the reason there will be no outright bans on legislative gifts is because they do not want to offend the school children who want to give them such gifts! Hey, I'm not making this up, read it here:
Don't let the cat get your tongues.

Nice catch, Oz.

Parody is dead.

SL Trib had an editorial earlier this week, I think, that asked of legislators "What part of 'take no gifts' is it you're having trouble understanding?" Or words to that effect.

Personally, of course, I thank Ra that we have a fine House leader like Clark to protect us from heartless bastards like you, Oz, who would callously crush the generosity of spirit of small children under the guise of "ethics reform."

You should be ashamed.... [grin]

Did you ever wonder of the NEW Speaker is the "one that could make thinks happen" in the walker bribery case.
After all he was the majority leader, and he does and still works for the Zions Bank. After all they wanted to control the 11 billion dollars the state has.

What's the matter with teaching schoolchildren that it's improper to give gifts to legislators?

Bill and OL:

Well, I don't know, guys. Usually the "gifts" are the result of class arts and crafts or social studies projects. I don't see any problem with that, and it is ludicrous for Rep. Clark to suggest a gifts ban would prevent Ms. Crumpott's third grade class from presenting Rep. Foghorn with a paper mache' model of Mt. Ogden they made as a class project. At some point, common sense has to count for something, and this is one of those instances. I cannot imagine --- not even in Utah --- any judge with at least the intelligence god gave to a kumquat finding that paper mache' Mt. Ogden to be a "gift" in violation of an ethics statute banning gifts to legislators.

It would be fairly easy to carve out "school class projects" from a general gift ban.

Legislators could simply accept these "gifts" as trustees for the legislature, and display them in a capitol showcase for a period of time, perhaps in the "public" area, under the Capitol rotunda.

As usual, Rep. Clark is just blowing smoke.

Just vote for the republicans because we can trust them.
