Adventures of Matthew Godfrey: Better Cities "Ups the Ante" On Morgan County - Updated

Yep, Godfrey's an economic development wizard alright; and we'll all be standing by, to observe the Morgan County Council's next "move."

Lost or Otherwise Misplaced
Fascinating story in the morning's Standard, reporting on the latest efforts of Ogden City mayoral alumnus Matthew Godfrey, as he works his economic development magic on his new private sector clients, the lumpenitizens of Morgan County, specfically.  Seems that his Better Cities, Inc. crack team of industry professionals have run into a major log-jam in Morgan County.  Much to Godfrey's consternation, the "embarrassed city planners" of this quint little rural county have somehow lost or otherwise misplaced their water and sewer infrastructure maps:
Here's Godfrey's  setup:
“We had no idea, when we started, that nobody knew what the infrastructure was,” Godfrey said. “We came in and asked the planning department for the maps with the water, sewer, storm sewer, telephone, telecommunications, power. We asked for all that data and we were able to get the telecom and the power, but nobody knows where the water and sewer is.”
And here's the "kicker":
Godfrey also said he wouldn’t be able to recruit businesses to Morgan County until the layout of the infrastructure was known.
Morgan County Council:
Totally Flummoxed
No problemo, however folks, in the context of this morning's report that "Morgan County [has already] entered into a month-to-month agreement with Better City toward the beginning of this year and that payment to Better City is performance-based with a maximum payment of $3,500 per month." This whole problem can nevertheless be solved, Godfrey says, (menacingly), by simply "doubling down"
“It would allow you to take the existing money that is already allocated for economic development, that’s paying us, and to double it”
So what about it folks?  How would you characterize Godfrey's "closing" tactic in re this matter?
Yep, Godfrey's an economic development wizard alright... for the benefit of  his private company's own economic development, that is.  And we'll all be standing by, with abated breath, of course, to observe the Morgan County Council's next "move," now that they've been deftly and craftily painted into the corner.

Update 8/22/13 1:40 p.m: Here's a  screenshot of Godfrey's new "Porsche ride."  It's 1979-era water cooled 280Z knockoff,  which some Porsche fanciers say ain't a REAL Porsche at all.

Godfrey's 924 Porsche

We'll check in later, once that Godfrey has "cleaned out" his "urban leadership clients"sufficiently to buy some real exotic German Iron, of course:

Porsche Boxter $

Needless to say, we'll be following up on this aspect of today's WCF story with the utmost vigor.

All four phases of closings are very predicable coming from Godfrey. Make them feel like they have a problem, blame them for that problem, shame them for their neglect and then come and save them from themselves for profit. What a prize he is and still scamming "HIS PEOPLE". I believe he still has friends in the crowbar hotel he needs to visit.

LOL...you telling me there isn't one drawing out there that shows water mains...pull my finger...now there might not be a "master drawing"...but the pieces are there.

II former Ogden Mayor Boss Godfey Sez it, I it has to be true, right, LOL?

I wonder what tactic he will attempt to use on the elected officials in Price Utah if they dare question some of his outrageous claims he made regarding his work on economic development in Ogden.

Ahem! The "embarrassed" citizens of Morgan County should demand their money back from Godfrey and should also fire everyone on the County Council! "Embarrasing?" You bet!

How much do I car what car our ex-Hizzonah drives? Just a little less than I care about what the Kardashians were up to last night.

I dunno, Bob. Speaking for myself, I think it adds some interesting insight.

So I suppose the reason people move to the untrammeled Morgan County, is because they can't wait for it to become LA? It seems the whole push is for more people, as fast as possible. They are paying Godfrey, hoping he can make it happen. Why??

Can you spell midlife crisis?

rudizink said...

Yep. Kinda has that "feel" to it, dunnit?

He could always go to his buddy Val Southwick for advice about that.

I'm getting real tired of hearing about all his successes...his "team" so called wasn't even part of the things that happened in Ogden for better or worse....nothing but a company that just sucks off the government teat....and writes grants for municipalities so it can suck some more off the teat...and it really hasn't done anything...sorry, but being the mayor of a town and using its resources is one thing, but claiming your team and your company did it borders on fraud!!! The before and after photos on their website are soooo misleading....There otta be a law....oh wait....

I can think of a lot of things to bash Lord Godfrey for, but purchasing a 924 isn't one of them. In fact, I wish he had been as frugal with O-towns money as he appears to be with his own as 924's can be had reasonably cheap. Talk to a 911 driver and if the motors not in the back it's not a REAL Porsche. I always thought the 924 with it's little 6 banger and flared wide body stance from certain angles was a looker. It was reasonably quick and handled well for it's time. Never heard it called a Chevy Z-28 knock off (in fact it looks nothing like one), but it was routinely compared to it's bigger brother the 928, and in that regard it always came up short. So it appears it and it's owner do have a common bond (coming up short). I can just imagine how Godfrey would have been crucified on this blog if he had a Land Rover LR4 or M-Benz Gelandewagen with paper plates in the driveway that are all the rage among our seemingly endless crop of Utah nouveau riche these days. I'm giving him a pass until a Porsche Pan American shows up on his driveway (which the hard core 911 drivers villify as well).

Ahh..that's a Porsche Panamera (for crying out loud the 911 drivers will now crucify me) : (

Great post, AWM. Even as a 911 guy, I always appreciated the 924, in it's increasingly muscular incarnations, even though it had its motor mounted upfront. And BTW, you're right: It was in fact a 280Z knockoff, an error which I've corrected in the main story above.

I noticed that Godfrey spoke ofa lot of Snowbasins development being slated to come into Morgan County. Snowbasin development? Does that mean Godfrey will revive talk of how a gondola is the ultimate solution to increasing the tax base and increasing tourism?

Great post, AWM. Even as a snobby "911 guy" myself, I confess I always appreciated the 924, in its increasingly muscular incarnations, even though it had its water-cooled motor mounted upfront. And BTW, you're right: It was in fact a 280Z knockoff, a bone-headed error which I've now corrected in the main story above.

snowbasin has been talking expansion for forever....it is just a local day ski area..nothing to do after the lifts stop.

rudizink said...

Be VERY afraid, Morgan County residents! It's back!

Bob Becker said...

Snow Basin did a big public presentation of its destination resort development plans last year up at the basin. I attended. Much of the development [condos, homes, golf courses, movie theaters, shopping, villas, etc] is slated for land to the north and east in Weber County, but some residential development slated to the south as well. There were no gondolas in the plan, and no direct over the mountain connection to Ogden of any kind.

smaatguy said...

Lol....you have obviously never been there.

Earl was still alive at the time and for whatever reason he was never enthralled with the gondola concept. His son in law Peterson was always driving that train. While no mention has been made lately of this issue (gondola) its safe to say one thing has changed. Earl no longer stands in the way and Petersons wounded ego still needs healing (as it was always under Earls thumb and in his shadow).

Well, well, well...looks like North Ogden is coughing money up to Smiths...you telling me they wouldn't have done that new store without the freebies from the City...and there is Godfrey right in the middle...acting as if HE made this happen...BS....and now talking about RDA funds...gee, makes you wonder if there are some fees for him in that plan..... Smiths sees the opportunity and the $$$$ they will make in the project...they would have done this without taxpayer dollars...to say they are not giving Smiths money is hogwash....they are just basically taking the fees they would already get and using about half to build infrastructure....a duck is a duck is a duck....

You might not have been living in the area at the time of the 1999 Ogden mayoral race. At that time the previous Mayor had floated the idea of a gondola. Godrey while running for election dismissed the gondola plan. But within months after his election he vigoursly pursued building a gondola. Just because Godfrey has not yet propsed a gondola connection from Morgan County to Snowbasin does not mean the idea will not be revived from the developers best friend Matthew Godfrey.
