Fascinating (and exclusive) political story on theWashington Times website this morning. The Republican National Committee is actually branding with a hot iron the arguably Worst President of the United States of America ever! GOP insiders are complaining he's a socialist. Imagine that. We gleefully incorporate the lede below:
Republican Party officials say they will try next month to pass a resolution accusing President Bush and congressional Republican leaders of embracing "socialism," underscoring deep dissension within the party at the end of Mr. Bush's administration.Read the full WaTi article here:
Those pushing the resolution, which will come before the Republican National Committee at its January meeting, say elected leaders need to be reminded of core principles. They said the RNC must take the dramatic step of wading into policy debates, which traditionally have been left to lawmakers.
"We can't be a party of small government, free markets and low taxes while supporting bailouts and nationalizing industries, which lead to big government, socialism and high taxes at the expense of individual liberty and freedoms," said Solomon Yue, an Oregon member and co-sponsor of a resolution that criticizes the U.S. government bailouts of the financial and auto industries.
• EXCLUSIVE: RNC draft rips Bush's bailoutsBetter late than never, as we always say, when we're waxing poetic and spewing out fundamental ideological principles.
The national GOP needs to get its act together if it wants to survive as a viable political party, we think.
Imagine a political entity run by one political party alone. Scary?
Oh that's right. We live in Utah, a state governed by one party rule, and a reasonable facsimile of a totalitarian fascist theocratic state.

Yes, yes, all very nice. But a day late and a dollar short. Where was the RNC when Bush in his first term destroyed the surplus and guaranteed budget deficits for decades ahead with his massive tax cuts for the wealthy? Where was the RNC when he passed arguably the largest unfunded mandate in living memory: the Medicare drug benefit in such a form that it mostly worked as a massive government subsidy for the Big Pharma? I'll tell you where the RNC was: marching like lemming along with McConnel and Bishop and all the rest supporting damn near everything President Chaney wanted, simply because he was an R.
The RNC statement today reminds me of nothing so much as some major crook who suddenly "finds Jesus" somewhere between conviction and sentencing. Think Chuck Colson.
LOL, Curm. I consider this to be a true "man bites dog" story. You're right about "day late;dollar short," of course.
Better late than never, though, as I said.
There's no doubt in my mind that the "party of Lincoln" needs to be more of a "gatekeeper" than ever before. Apparently some within the party are now willing to step up for that.
Too many Big Government lefties have slipped into the party by merely wearing the GOP lapel pin.
Something needs to be done to assure that politicians of all party persuasions will adhere to their party platforms.
I'll label this the first "baby step" in the right direction.
Do you know I would be if I were a George W Bush Supporter!!!!
No. Not a republican.
I would be ashamed!!!!!!
There is nothing wrong with Socialism. I personally love the ideas of public schools, a public library, and road reconstruction.
Socialism has been given a dirty name by the media in charge and this latest story is just more of the same. It is the capitalists trying to brand socialist ideas as an evil term which it is not!
George Bush is not a socialist but instead is a supporter of corporate welfare. Corporate welfare is not socialism but is in fact Capitalism at it´s finest!
Rafiki:
You seem like a very nice person, so I won't hammer you on your statement: "There is nothing wrong with Socialism." The excesses of world socialism ought to be obvious, but for some they're apparently not.
In that connection... here's your reading assignment:
1) The Law - Frederik Bastiat. Promise me you'll at least read the first couple of chapters.
2) Bush is a right wing socialist. Not all socialists are egalitarians; nor are they all Marxists. Read up! We are all Bismarckians now
Fabulous articles, especially the Harper's one - worst president ever.
We have experienced important history.
Rudi,
I promise that I will read both the articles you posted. I will admit that I am a bit unlearned in the terms (labels) being used.
I don´t have a whole lot of time right now but will read them at the end of January and post a comment to you then.
Happy new years to you.
Cheers,
