Salt Lake Tribune: Corroon To Run For Governor

Reader query: Can a popular Democratic Party candidate with genuine fiscal conservative credentials expect to make a credible showing for the top state government executive slot in the reddest of all red states?

Interesting news this morning concerning the upcoming 2010 Utah Governor's race. Recent rumors are confirmed this morning, as Democratic Party insiders leak the information that Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon "plans to announce next week that he will run for governor":
Corroon to run for governor
From this morning's Tribune article:
...Corroon has become a household name in Utah's most-populous county, burnishing his reputation as a fiscal conservative through his high-profile rejection of a Real Salt Lake soccer stadium deal and as a reformer by returning stability to a county rocked by scandals that toppled his Republican predecessor.
Question is, will Corroon stand a chance in a statewide race? Utahns have not elected a Democratic governor since 1980.
The Trib poses a good question this morning, we think.

What about it gentle readers? Can a popular Democratic Party candidate with genuine fiscal conservative credentials expect to make a credible 2010 showing for the top state government executive slot in the reddest of all red states?

Knock yourselves out, WCF readers.

Who will be the first to comment?

It seems ideal to have a conservative Democrat governor, especially one with bulletproof credentials of opposing the Real soccer stadium taxpayer heist.

It would create a healthy tension with the Republican legislature, which would hopefully reduce the level of graft considerably.

If Gary Herbert blows it enough, perhaps Corroon will be elected. As noted, a demo guv is not unprecedented in Utah.

I think guvvie Gary has already blown it, esp. with the Snake Valley Aquifer agreement revealed this week. What a terrible mistake this will be.

That and people miss former Governor Huntsman who is probably more like Corroon . . .

In a word, no.

Nothing short of the First Presidency's endorsement of Corroon will wrest the governorship from Herbert's hands.

If Herbert gets "primaried" (or, in this case, "conventioned"), then Corroon has a chance.

Otherwise, probably not.

Your all pretty much right on Carron doesn't have much of shot being elceted in Utah.

He's not a big enough of a personal looser like Chief Senator Greeiner, Matty Goofy, Commish Bishoff and Brad DEDeee to get elected ,for some reason you have to be stupid like these people to get elected!!!
