Gage Froerer's HB 218 is Finally Assigned to Senate Committee

If ever you are to chime in on the "Powderville" situation... the time should be NOW!

Okay, Gentle Weber County Forum readers:

Query: What do we like @ WCF more than hard-core political activism?
Answer: MORE hard-core political activism! Doh.

And speaking of that, here's the latest news about Rep. Gage Froerer's HB 218:

Gage's bill has now been assigned to the Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Standing Committee, for 8:00 a.m, on Thursday, which committee hearing will be the last procedural hurdle before it's moved onto the Full Senate, for an up/down vote.

It's a pretty favorable committee assignment for Rep. Froerer, actually, we believe, with the likes of Weber County-friendly Senators Jon Greiner and Scott Jenkins sitting on the committee. But considering serious neoCON Senate opposition to HB 218, this committee assignment still remains far from a Gage Froerer slam-dunk.

Those of us who'd like to restore voting rights to the harried "Powdervillians" therefore can't take anything for granted, even at this juncture. The last thing we'd like to see would be to have this bill killed in Thursday's committee hearing.

So... we'll once again call upon our faithful readers, the Utah lumpencitizens, just as we successully did before, to once again chime in on this subject, and to lodge with this Senate Committee your ever-savvy comments on this subject.

In that connection, here's our new Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Standing Committee contact link page which we've put together for that very purpose:

Don't let the cat get your tongues, O Gentle Ones. Even if you think you're sometimes internet tongue-tied... please don't hesitate to click on the link and throw in your own two-bits this go-round.

If we sit on our thumbs at this juncture, the "Powdervillians" will predictably be screwed.

If ever you are to chime in on the "Powderville" situation... the time should be NOW!

Have at it, O Gentle Ones.

We recommend that everyone give this issue careful consideration. The mere fact that several Valley citizens lost their fundamental civil rights without even a single no vote in the legislature a few years ago is a wake up call for all of us.

HB 218 would restore the affected resident's ability to decide if they are going to be in the town.

Imagine yourself caught in this same situation, and contact these Senators on the committee with your thoughts.

C'mon you yay-hoos! I just sent my email off to the committee! Copy & paste the first one you sent, or steal Gangbusters' comment - and send it off. No offense, Gangbusters, but you put it quite nicely and succinctly.

Quick, someone check and make sure Utah Realtors haven't invited Greiner to breakfast that morning.

Hell, I'd be happy to drag in a vat of eggs benedict, caviar, oysters and a magnum of Dom Perignon, if only Greiner will show up at Thursday's Government Operations Committee meeting...

It is mediocre theater that Froerer and his cronies in the GOP leadership are playing out for the pure hearted citizens of Utah. Unfortunately their script calls for the bill to die in the senate. However, the brave warrior Gage can at least hold his head high as he went down fighting for his home town folks.

Pretty bush league public manipulation for sure, but it amazingly keeps working on the great unwashed of Zion. Put an "R" behind your name, and shazam! you too are a bona fide wizard.

I an glad that the republicans did this TO people all because of a well paid lunch. I hope that Greiner the whiner is not out to lunch on this bill. I seems to me if Democrats were in power that we would not be having this conversation.

Don't look for a change. As of yesterday, there are I think five leg districts in Weber County for which Dems have no candidate running in the coming election, nor are there Dem candidates for the two seats up for election on the Weber County Commission. No candidates running.

I can understand why, of course. Making a serious run for office is expensive and very time consuming, and so long as all that is needed to be elected is an R behind your name on the ballot, sinking funds and time, a lot of time, into a run for office as a D in those districts can look like, and often is, an exercise in charging windmills.

So don't look for much by way of change.

Crum, Don Quixote, chapter 13, " If you fight with windmills, they may cast you down into the mud, but they may also lift you up with the stars".

What we need is candidates with the "R" that have a soul and are not part of the culture. Difficult to do up here.

J Greiner emailed me back - the only one from the committee so far - said : Thank you for your thoughts.
