Science Saturday: This Week's Science News Roundup

In our EVER-tedious effort to highlight the latest News in Science, here's our latest Science Saturday post

According to the online Journal of Cosmology, Dr. Richard B. Hoover (Ph.D. NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center) has discovered evidence of microfossils similar to Cyanobacteria, in freshly fractured slices of the interior surfaces of the Alais, Ivuna, and Orgueil CI1 carbonaceous meteorites. The implications are that life is everywhere, and that life on Earth may have come from other planets:
We'll Chalk this up as another Big Win for science, amidst the lame-brained furor of some political nitwits to take our World Culture back to the pre-Renaissance 13th Century.

On another Science topic, this is fairly tantalizing too:
Unsure about what the potential discovery of this "Higgs boson particle" really represents for science? Here's a helpful rundown for all you "lay" non-physics-trained readers... from that old standby... Wikipedia:
One thing for sure... it ain't just anthropologists who are searching for that elusive "missing link."

Gotta add that we're envious of scientific researchers who get to ply their trade at the most fantastic science lab in human history!

That's it for now, WCF science fans.

In closing, we''ll invite all GOP members of the Utah Legislature to chime in with their own competing crackpot science theories.

Well Rudi, if all them brainiacs who's doin the lookin looked in the right place they would find two of them "missing links" right here in the Pretty Great Land of Zion. In fact this time of year you can find them both in the same place - either on the floor of the Great State of Utah's annual legislative comedy/goof fest, or sidlin their fat guts up to another free fancy spread which of course is on the tab of some special interest/crony group.

Folks around here generally recognize them as Buttars and Wimmer. I mean think about, take a good look at the two, get your old zoology books out and look at some pictures of them so called "proto-men", listen to what they say and and then tell me they ain't the real deal...

In re: the evidence of microfossils found on metorites story:

Exciting report, but this is still I think very preliminary stuff. There was something similar reported some years ago, and much disagreement emerged over whether the "evidence" was in fact biological in origin or not.

I did notice that the scientists reporting their research posted it for others to examine, and invited critical commentaries, analyses. This is how all real scholarship works. Or should. To be contrasted, say, with the way the Utah legislature works --- throttling examination, reflection and impeding the presentation of any points that do not fit nicely with the majority's pre-conceived notions.

I note that the capital improvement project list is out, reflecting the council priorities, and the Field House is ranked 18th out of 18. For Godfrey supporters "18 out of 18" means "dead last".

It would be nice if we had a mayor who actually involved himself in public matters, rather than spending his time trying to promote the latest boondoggle that Dave Wadman comes up with to try to make a fast buck for himself.

Anyway, at least we have a city council that has some intelligence. But I am tired ... so very tired ... of this mayor.

Off Topic, but after this week's legislative shenanagans, I was cruisin' for some plain old good news. And I found it over at the SL Trib site. Here it is:

Ogden • Weber State overcame a 12-point halftime lead and 27 points by Eastern Washington guard Cliff Colimon to grab a 79-70 victory to advance in the Big Sky Conference tournament Saturday in the Dee Events Center.

Full story here.
