The Standard-Examiner describes the latest episode in the long-simmering Jon Greiner Hatch Act Saga, with this morning's Scott Schwebke story, which reports that our Ogden Police Chief/State Senator is now mired in the midst of a multi-day administrative hearing, wherein it will ultimately be determined whether Ogden City's carefully-crafted Hatch Act Compliance Program, (whereby Chief Greiner has been formally insulated from duties and authority related to federal grants) is sufficient to remove the matter from Hatch Act jurisdiction:
• Hatch Act hearing puts senator/Ogden police chief's future on the lineCuriously, and despite the Godfrey administration's otherwise scrupulous efforts to distance Chief Greiner from any official acts related to application, management or disposition of federal grant funds, Mr. Schwebke's morning story reveals that the administration may have nevertheless clownishly dropped the ball, by allowing Chief Greiner to affix his signature and/or initials to a number of grant applications and/or other grant-related documents. This slip-up of course thus provides the federal Office of Special Counsel a seemingly significant angle of attack -- a circumstance which could have been easily avoided. In that connection, it seems to us that it it would have made better sense for the administration to have required Ogden CAO John Patterson or Assistant Chief Tarwater to have signed off on these documents. Why they committed this particular bone-headed blunder we'll never know, although we will snarkily suggest that it does seem consistent with the general level of incompetence we've come to expect from "Boss Godfrey's Gang that Can't Shoot Straight."
We're posting this article mainly for archival consistency, inasmuch as we don't reasonably anticipate any real news about the outcome of this week's hearings for at least a few more months.
Nevertheless, we'll open the floor for any appropriate reader comments.

I believe that Chief Griener should resign both positions of public trust. what he has done is so dishonest that he has lost it when it comes to ethics. as a senator he takes these bribes call gifts and so there is no honesty in what he is doing and what shame he has brought on to the institute of the senate. and to the position of police chief. Maybe The senator could explain why he didn't use his integrity when question back in Oct of 2006. This is just dishonest.
He should be made to pay the fines and give back his legislative pay, because he would not have been elected in the first place.
I for one will be watching how this so called honorable man now makes his decisions.
Busy man, these days, Chief Greiner is. He's Ogden's "full time" Chief of Police [or so he and the Mayor tell us], yet he's also State Senator from Ogden area which takes [or should] a lot of time. And he's now spending time defending himself against charges that by holding both jobs at once, he's violated the Hatch Act.
How does he find time to cash his full retirement checks as Ogden's retired Chief of Police?
He doesn't need to cash his retirement checks. He's married to a Lindquist.
I've heard that the economic downturn has made things relatively hard even for a Lindquist.
No wonder Godfrey selected Phipps for City Council! His level of incompetence would make him right at home.
If the Office of Special Counsel complaint is upheld that Greiner violated the Hatch Act who is responsible for repaying the $215,088?
Ray,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the ones who will be paying the big fine is YOU and all other Ogden tax payers.
Sometimes it seems there is no end to the costs associated with the incompetent and morally bankrupt Godfrey regime.
Ozboy, Money that could be spent paying for an alleged funding problem at Mount Ogden Golf Course will instead be spent bailing out Jon Greiner? If Greiner were truly concerned about the taxpayers of Ogden City he would resign as Chief of Police. If Godfrey were to do the right thing he would fire Jon Greiner.
Little Bird,
economics up or down, people still die. Lindquist family will survive ...

I just found this great post on At-Large city council Seat "B" candidate Bart Blair's campaign blog, where he reels off his positions on a number of important Ogden City political issues:
Bart Blair on the issues
This should handily answer gentle reader Marions's query, about where Mr. Blair stands on the issues, methinks.
This quote from Mr. Blair stands out: Debt should only be incurred for needs rather than wants.
Agreed.
Mr. Blair did a good job on defining the issues and stating where he stands on them. I congratulate him and wish him good luck.
It seems like Blair and Garcia are the only ones who have gone beyond campaign slogans in their web sites, and have actually written much on what's really going on in the land of Oz.
To "I want the Truth:"
We can't handle the truth.
Col J. N. said "We can't handle the truth"...now ain't THAT the truth!
Screw truth, it is always a con-mans lie or a hubris filled delusion. Get yourself some facts, and act on them.
Truth, in a universe this vast and amazing? Sounds like some anthropomorphic religious nonsense, yet again.
Truth. P'Tah!
Chief Greiner and Mayor Godfrey have fired people for lying; they both need to fired. Two hypocrites!!!
Every Chief of Police signs off on and oversees Federal Grants. And if they don’t they should be fired for dereliction of duty. Chief Greiner can’t have it both ways.
I found this on one of the newspaper blogs and it is funny, but I think it is true.

I should have put my name on this up top. Now I am being honest that It was me that posted that and I should not have defamed Rep. Hansen like that. I'm sorry. I will retype it for all you that didn't read my posting the first time. Now I have my integrity back. This whole brouhaha is nothing more than a hatchet attack, not a Hatch Act violation. This is about Representative Neil Hansen's daughter getting a traffic ticket "I LIED ABOUT THAT" Neil Hansen NOT getting special treatment in getting the ticket "fixed." Hansen is the guy behind the complaint. "I LIED ABOUT THIS TOO." That's public info, why not report on it? Hansen ran for mayor and lost. THIS IS THE TRUTH. He wanted a new police chief, I GUESS THAT WHEN I QUIT HE CAN HAVE A NEW ONE.
Representative Hansen has wasted the time of the legislature for several years running with his never-get-out-of-the-gate bill to ban citation quotas. YES I DID VOTE TO KILL THIS EVERY TIME, THAT IS TRUE. I support banning quotas, I LIED ABOUT THIS TOO. but he wanted to ban police accountability. He even paraded her before the legislature as an example of someone who committed several violations and was cited by police when a state legislator was in the car! YES BUT I DIDN'T TELL YOU IS, THE OFFICER WAS JUST TRYING TO GET HIS RAISE, HANSEN’S DAUGHTER WAS HIS INTERN THAT YEAR AND SHE WAS HELPING HER DAD OUT. Holding a representative accountable. What a concept! WE SENATORS DON’T HAVE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE BECAUSE I’M A REPUBLICAN.
I Jon Greiner AM an American military hero and a fine person. JUST ASK ME I WILL TELL YOU!
